Short Assignment 4

  • by

We do need to rethink how we enforce traffic stops and change them. Most traffic stops do not complete the task of deterring unsafe driving because most of the time it is minor infractions. Like if a driver forgot to turn on his turning signal but no cars were coming the police would pull him over and use that as a tactic to find something suspicious. From that little thing the stop can escalate and from there become very dangerous. For example like in the article chief of Los Angelas police Michale Moore said “We want to fish with a hook, not a net,” meaning they want real stops that are actual suspicion or real crime not fishing for any little thing to arrest someone. This is an example of why cops aren’t respected throughout communities because people feel as though instead of protecting they are targetting.

  1. Hi Elijah, Your argument highlights the need to reevaluate current traffic stop practices. Focusing on minor infractions doesn’t deter unsafe driving and can escalate seemingly trivial situations. Law enforcement should prioritize genuine suspicions or real crimes over casting a wide net. This contributes to a lack of respect for law enforcement within communities. A more effective and community-oriented approach to policing can help foster mutual trust and respect.
