To begin with, I believe that news agencies and publishers mainly focus on providing the general public with news that will grab their attention and invite them to read more and, therefore, continue to either revisit that news website or purchase the physical newspaper. To get that attention, they release articles about murders and atrocities because our minds make us relate to that crime and think, “What if that was me?” or, “What would I do in that situation?”. Crimes involving death, murder, rape, robbery, or extortion, for instance, get much more of a reaction than essential political matters or news about the new trash cans they are putting in place around the city, for example. These crimes occur daily in the United States, and the information decides which crimes or events they want to cover. I have found four different articles related to crime that I found looking at the New York Times. These are examples, in my opinion, of articles that aim to grab the reader’s attention even though, in the span of the crime in this country, the issue is minuscule and does not affect the reader personally. Due to the current climate involving police reform in this country, many crimes involving officers who violate the law often go to articles for publishers. They are usually guaranteed to get clicks as the country wants to see those police whittled away from positions of power.
