Short Assignment #1- NYT (New York Times) Stories about Crime

Summary

Drugs are harmful and a serious problem for people everywhere. Criminal activity and drug usage are closely related. Drug addicts commit crimes in order to get their drugs, which harms society. In addition, a lot of criminals use narcotics as a form of intoxication. Another result of drug misuse is drug trafficking. Robbery is more likely to be reported on as most people who commit armed robberies do so because they want to get money, which they subsequently frequently use to buy narcotics. However, some armed robbers also do it to elevate their prestige among their peers.

  1. On September 22, 2023 today Josh Akins was a drug addict and went to jail for saving his friend from fentanyl abuse. He had a very rough childhood dealing with rape, his grandfather dying which was his main family figure in his life and dealing with a rough environment. He turned homeless and met a great friend named Chris Jake and they related to everything in their life. They both believed in god and faith and also Chris was molested as a kid too. Josh and Chris planned to end their addiction and be clean. However, Josh woke up one day under an abandoned porch and he walked to Chris to hang out with him and he was on no fentanyl. Chris begged Josh to get fentanyl from his car and Chris was in the middle of overdosing. Josh did CPR panicking driving to a gas station yelling for everyone to call 911. Sadly, Josh called the cops and they arrested him. “They want to know where did the drugs come from. What kind of drugs? Who bought the drugs? Where did the money come from? Was it shared? Who used the drugs first?” The ambulance took Chris and Josh was charged for first degree murder. Lawmakers and law enforcement agencies are increasingly holding drug users themselves accountable as the epidemic of fentanyl usage in America spreads uncheckedly and continues to kill tens of thousands of people annually.I gave it my all, yet it almost felt pointless what I was trying to do for him. However, Josh spent a lot of time berating himself for his grandfather’s passing and believing that there was something he could have done to prevent it. And when he had the chance to save someone else’s life but they still passed away. This portrays that drug addiction is as bad impacts on your physical and mental health as well as your employment and personal life. It is also unlawful. Additionally, quitting is difficult and might cause despair. If you become hooked to drugs, you could overdose and pass away. Please do not do drugs with anyone or get peer pressured. https://www.nytimes.com/2023/09/22/podcasts/the-daily/fentanyl-murder.html?
  2. A man named Jarrod Powell admitted to killing a 61-year-old immigrant in East Harlem two years prior because the victim was Asian received a 22-year prison term. In New York City, harassment and violence against Asian people and communities—particularly Asian elders—rose sharply during the COVID-19 outbreak. The New York City Human Rights Law prohibits discrimination and harassment on the basis of race, national origin, age, and disability (including having or being thought to have COVID-19 exposure). Since COVID-19 began, we have observed a substantial rise in incidents of animosity and harassment aimed at Chinese and other Asian populations as a result of COVID-19 stigma and false information. https://www.nytimes.com/2023/03/31/nyregion/asian-hate-crime-killing-man-sentenced.html?searchResultPosition=9
  3. According to a recently unearthed letter from a German Jesuit to Pope Pius XII’s personal secretary, the pope was aware of Hitler’s atrocities but decided to keep quiet. The letter cited the Auschwitz death camp in Poland in relation to another, as of yet undiscovered report; it also stated the number of priests imprisoned in the Dachau concentration camp near Munich; and it described the thousands of Poles and Jews who were murdered by the Nazis at Belzec. There were numerous letters about death camps that were verified. In terms of investigative tools, trace evidence can offer details about the source of a sample and the date the material was manufactured, all of which can help to narrow the pool of potential suspects in a case. This brings awareness of finding information in the past is very useful to criminologists today as you these information in the past has not been picked up. https://www.nytimes.com/2023/09/16/world/europe/pope-pius-holocaust.html?searchResultPosition=2
  4. On September 15, 2023 the son of El Chapo Ovidio faced Criminal Charges in the United States. According to his attorney and American officials, Ovidio Guzmán López, one of Joaqun Guzmán Loera’s four sons and the most notorious drug lord in Mexico known as El Chapo, was extradited to Chicago on Friday to stand trial on a plethora of federal narcotics crimes. Prosecutors in New York were particularly disappointed that Mr. Guzmán López will be tried in Chicago since they had filed broad accusations against him and his brothers in April that centered on their attempts to smuggle the lethal narcotic fentanyl across the border. It’s unclear what will happen to the New York indictment, which provided a comprehensive look at how fentanyl was produced, transported, and finally sold on the black market, now that Mr. Guzmán López will be tried in Chicago. It is an opioid, fentanyl. Opioids, which include both natural and artificial medications derived from or connected to the opium poppy, are substances that affect the opioid receptors in the brain. Chronic pain, severe cancer pain, nerve damage, back injuries, severe trauma, and surgery all require the prescription drug fentanyl. Drugs are harmful and a serious problem for people everywhere. https://www.nytimes.com/2023/09/15/us/el-chapo-son-extradited.html
