Summary

I chose the ad hominem fallacy, which involves attacking the person making the argument rather than the argument itself. It is often done to discredit an opponent's argument by suggesting they are untrustworthy or have some personal flaw that undermines their credibility. For example an opponent attacking a candidate by saying "you can't trust them because they're a convicted felon." In order to facilitate constructive and substantive discussions, it is crucial to identify and acknowledge the existence of the ad hominem fallacy. One can avoid distractions caused by personal attacks and instead concentrate on the relevant issues being debated.
