Anthony Sanchez Conversation #2

In Beyoncé’s music video “Formation”, she reveals she wanted to send a strong message for racist haters about black pride as well as being a woman. I believe that she delivered successfully as my interpretation from Beyoncé’s music video and the message she was delivering was how she is aware of her haters and how they may not like her due to being a woman as well her ethnicity and where she’s from, however despite the hate she may have from it, she has managed to become very successful. Matsoukas was able to help Beyoncé convey her message in the music video by her team “blackify” the set and change the scenery to areas closely related to black people and their history. She also shows in the music video individuals who were of color such as Martin Luther King as well as makes references about black people. An example of emotive language that she used in the song was in the lines “I like my baby heir with baby hair and afros/I like my negro nose with Jackson Five nostrils” This allows the audience to know that she is proud of her ethnicity and accepts it despite what the racist haters say. Another use would be when she says “I might just be a Black Bill Gates in the making,” which was used to show how successful and wealthy she has become. I believe the song became controversial as it is a callout to racists as well as how it is a black power song.
