Vania Jaramillo Conversation 1

Summary

As Gary Meegan referenced, critical thinking is “the art of analyzing and evaluating thinking with a view to improving it." Meegan views the matter of thinking critically as an “art,” with its importance lying in the way that it reflects an individual’s worldly perspective, as well as it being a determining factor in the way someone acts. Similarly, he further explains that the art of critical thinking goes beyond one's self, such that it also helps us in viewing things from other people’s perspective and consequently analyze their thinking.

Meanwhile, speaker Jesse Richardson defines critical thinking as something that goes hand in hand with creative thinking. That is, the overall power lies in being able to not only question things and liberate our mind, but also being able to think rationally amongst that subsequent surrounding freedom. Richardson believes that the most important aspect of thinking critically is that it helps us to realize that being wrong is a good thing, seeing as it allows oneself to be open-minded. It’s in this case that I especially agree with Richardson– it's greatly powerful in that it leads us to consider new perspectives instead of boxing ourselves in and defining ourselves according to the ideas we’ve followed for a long while.
