Hello Scholars,

Please note that you must turn in your Final Essay Exam in the Final Essay Exam module  by 11:59 p.m. tonight. This counts for 30% of your final weighted grade, and no submissions will be accepted after midnight. You will have had three days to complete the exam. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me as soon as possible.

Good luck!

Final Exam Opens at 12:01 a.m.

Hello Scholars,

The Final Exam opens on 12/12/2020 at 12:01 a.m. This means that if you stay up after midnight tonight, you will be able to see the questions. You can find the Final Exam in the black sidebar if you scroll down to the “Other Information” section.

I will be on zoom tomorrow morning at 8 a.m. for office hours in case anyone has any remaining questions about the Final Exam or any other work from this semester.

Please remember, the Final Exam will close on 12/14/2020 at 11:59 p.m. Until then, you will be able to go in and out of the module, but after midnight on 12/14 it will close.

Good luck!

Final Week

Hello Scholars,

Please take some time this week to check whether you have any remaining work to hand in for this class. By now, you should have submitted three finished essays on Blackboard, poste a Voicethread or video version of your “Where I’m From” poem on BMCC OpenLab, and contributed to at least three discussions. Please check your weighted grade, and if you see any discrepancies, please let me know ASAP.

The Final Exam, based on the Burkeman and Emerson readings, will open on December 12th at 12:01 a.m., and close on December 14th at 11:59 p.m. You will have the entire three days to write and submit your essay. You can write it in Word or Google Docs (don’t submit a Google document or a Pages document), and save it as a Word document and submit it in the Final Exam space, which you should be able to see on the left sidebar in Blackboard. Please make sure you submit in the assignment space and not in the comments section.

Here is the Final Exam Study Guide, which you can download: 101-study-guide-fall-2020.pdf

I will be available all week to answer any questions, and I will be in zoom on Saturday December 12th for office hours between 8 a.m and 9:40 a.m. However, I cannot answer questions specifically about how to answer the Final Exam questions after you have read them.

Have a great week!

Yolande

This Week

Hello Scholars,

I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving. Our next meeting will be December 5th. This will be our final meeting before the Final Exam becomes available on December 12th.

By December 4th, please post your final draft of Essay 3 in the Assignments section. I will give comments and I will change the criteria for grading since you won’t be revising this essay.

Before we meet on December 5th, please re-read the Emerson and Burkeman essays, and please do your best to attend one of the final exam workshops in the attached schedule.

If you have missing work, please arrange to meet with me before our next class so we can make a plan

See you in class,

Yolande

This Week (until November 21st)

Hello Scholars,

This week, please read and annotate the Adichie and Smith readings in Module 10. Please post your proposal in the Essay 3 Discussion Board. This is the only thing that is due this week. The first draft of Essay 3 is due December 4th.

Please find time this week to have re-read and continue annotating the Final Exam readings by Emerson and Burkeman. As you do so, think about the Final Exam Talking Points:

  • Self Reliance / Conformity
  • Control (self, feelings, happiness)
  • Conventional Thinking
  • Stoics / Stoicism
  • Fulfillment/Contentment
  • Optimism / Positivity / Happiness
  • Failure / Success
  • Inconsistency
  • Incremental vs Fixed – theory

We will talk more about these next Saturday.

Have a great week,

Yolande
