The Founder

The brothers and Ray had different visions and goals. The brothers were more focused on improving their products and the quality of the food rather than the quantity being sold. On the other hand, Ray was more focused on how to make more money and faster.

2) It was the brothers’ choice to sell but they weren’t given the best deal by Ray. Ray had a lawyer and the guidance that he needed to expand the business. On the other hand, the brothers were never given credit for their ideas and improving the food which was what they mostly worked on. The contract the brothers signed gave them compensation for their work but it should have been more (ex: a percentage of the profits of the business in the future).

3) Local stores franchisees pay a royalty or fee to the company to open up. They are then allowed to use the company’s name and (in the case of McDonalds) food recipes. Franchisees can be opened by the McDonalds HeadQuarter or be independently operated. These local franchisees would then sell Mcdonald’s products in an effort to make a profit.

4) Ray made the majority of his money from real estate. He would allow people to open new McDonald’s stores (franchisees) and lease the land he originally bought to them.

5) It doesn’t really change my view on Mcdonalds’ because I understand there is always stuff going on behind closed doors for people with bad intentions to try to make more money. I think the brothers were unlucky to fell victim to selling out and not getting the credit they deserve but they should have fought for better benefits in the contract and be careful of who they trusted. Ray wanted to get rich quick but the reason people are in business in the first place is to try to generate maximum profit.

The Founder

  1. Dick and Mac wanted to wholeheartedly please their costumers. The provided quick service and good food. After their failed attempt to franchise, they decided to stick to one location. Their goal was to have a family friendly fast food resturant and to improve their product and service in the one location. In compare to Ray Kroc, he had a vision to open multiple locations, a worldwide franchise business. Ray Kroc wanted to open fast service restaurants all around the country.
  2. Ray Kroc was an intelligent man and I believe the McDonalds brothers trusted he could be successful in the franchising business. Although, the brothers were correct and business was growing quickly, Dick and Mac saw the inconsistency that Ray Kroc was providing the customers. I believe that selling the company to Ray Kroc was a good investment for the brothers. They had an opportunity to expand and create revenue with the different locations. Ray Kroc had a vision that the brothers could not see and eventually it caused Ray Kroc to proceed with the company’s growth and when he bought land to sell to franchisees, he bought the company from the McDonalds brothers. Although the brothers could have been a part of the growth, they settled for $2.7 million. I personally do not think that was a good deal, but as a growing franchise businessman, it was the best that could have been done.
  3. The local store franchisees provide a quick and friendly service with a wide selection of goods. McDonalds is a favorite for its quick service, the convenience of a utensil free meal and a take out option was something to top.
  4. As Ray Kroc grew the McDonalds business, he was promised to receive 1.9 percent of the gross sales. He later realized that it was not enough to cover his expenses. Not until he met Harry Sonnenborne, a man who showed him to sell real estate. The difference that franchises and local stores profit is that they receive a percentage of the company’s sells and how successful it becomes. As to real estate agents they buy land and sell it to make a profit on the properties values price.
  5. My view on McDonalds is 50/50. As an entrepreneur, Ray Kroc succeeded on the goal to expand, create, promote, improve and satisfy. McDonalds has became a America trademark, it is a restaurant that we all has had and will probably continue to enjoy. For me McDonalds was a place I just had to go to after school, it was the reward snack for when I passed my classes. In today’s day, it has not held its value as Dick and Ray would had hoped it would. Their goal was to provide quality control, Ray Kroc’s goal was to grow, expand locations and services.

The Founder

  1. Ray Kroc and the McDonald brothers are different in many ways. Ray Kroc is driven, motivated and persistent. He strives for success and doesn’t care what goes in his way to create an empire and make money. On the other hand, Dick and Mac McDonald were wise and humble brothers who started a family business in San Bernardino to cater to the families in the city. They believed creating good food in a family-friendly environment was all that mattered. They did not strive to make profits in the local business, nor were they persistent and driven to franchise outside of San Bernardino. Ray is an intelligent and charismatic individual that strives to network and build connections amongst other individuals. Ray prefers to exit his comfort zone if it means he will be successful in the end. Meanwhile, the McDonald brothers prefer to settle with what they already have instead of building an empire.
  2. I believe the brothers did the right thing initially by selling out and partnering with Ray. They had a transparent contract and agreement with Ray, which they firmly believed could not be exploited while running the partnership together. However, signs further on showed Ray was just in it for the money instead of the partnership. In the middle of the agreement, he tells the brothers that they are in safe hands and will be running the franchising operation outside of San Bernardino. With all the efforts in Ray’s hands, he created a fast-food empire all by himself but decided it wasn’t enough and took the name of the company and 100% of the ownership to himself. Although, I can agree that Ray was overboard, asking for a 4% cut instead of 1.9%. The brothers were already at a 0.5% cut. While, in my perspective, Ray is a horrible and greedy individual, he took an idea that was never going to grow if he wasn’t a part of it. Without him, McDonald’s would have never franchised into a national empire. The brothers squandered the potential of their company. With that said, I feel that the brothers should’ve known what was going to happen. They knew Ray Kroc personally, and they should’ve understood what would happen if he took over and franchised the company. From what I believe, the deal he asked for was a good deal, albeit greedy and selfish. They let a persistent and motivated individual run the company from a family business to a multimillion-dollar empire.
  3. The McDonald’s brother’s local restaurant made money because many ideas made their franchise stand out from other fast-food restaurants. They chose a family-friendly location, had a simple 3 item menu with cheap yet tasty food, a clean environment, plastic wrap instead of costly silverware, and most importantly, a fast and efficient food cooking system. The system the brothers developed was called the” Speedee Service System.” They created this system because they prioritized speed and quality. As mentioned by Dick McDonald, “orders are ready in 30 seconds, not 30 minutes”. Furthermore, they cut expenses significantly by using a walk-in system instead of having extra employees bring food to the customer’s cars.
  4. Ray Kroc made money because of an individual he met outside of the bank. Harry J. Sonneborn was a businessman that showed Ray that it wasn’t about the food; it was about the land. Sonneborn convinced Ray that he wasn’t dealing with the food industry; he was operating the real estate. Soon he co-founded a real estate company, without the brothers’ permission, to buy land and lease more locations to generate more revenue. Ray inundates the word “persistent,” which describes his personality. His persistence led him to create a real estate company with money as a main priority. This was entirely different from the McDonald’s brother’s local business as they made money by keeping control of one location, which often created a steady revenue or a break-even.
  5. Yes, it changed my view of McDonald’s. To the point where I’ll start second-guessing ever ordering food from their chain again. It’s also making me second guess whether I’d want to commit to having the corporate lifestyle when I’m older. All these schemes, scams, and stolen ideas have made me realize that the real world of business is much crueler than I have ever expected. The entire movie shows that, even with a drive and motivation to succeed, most will do undesirable actions to get what they want in life, even if these actions are unethical and could ruin another individual’s life.

The founder

1.The brothers were fine people, sincere and hard working. They were happy people who created a small but successful local business creating the best fast working system, but when it comes to Ray, he was ambitious. He saw an opportunity in the bothers’ industry and took advantage of it. He was selfish, but to the point that he betrayed the brothers and took the company from Him.

2.No, it was not the right choice to sell out to Ray mainly because while it seems like a good and fair deal, in the end, it was just not right. Although they took the 1.35 million dollars, the brothers still didn’t feel it was right because McDonald’s was their idea and was stolen from them. The worst part is that they had an agreement for royalties, some that were never received, and royalties worth 100 million per year.

3.The only reason the local franchisees were making money was that the system one of the brothers developed that he named “the Speedee system” would allow customers to have food in less than 30 seconds. Because of this system, they managed to sell food in the fastest way possible, making more customers come more to have a burger or fries.

4.When Ray was having trouble making money, he met Harry how told him how to make money using real estate. He would buy the land where one of the franchisees will establish and then charge a lease to that franchise.

5.It did not change my view. I think the only thing that the movie doesn’t change is McDonald’s essence. McDonald’s is still being McDonald’s. But it was interesting to know where McDonald’s was born and how it grew up.

The Founder

  1. What made Ray Kroc and the brothers different would be their drive, motivation and the way they seen things. I say this because when the brothers didn’t succeed they just moved on to the next plan that they had they didn’t really even push or give their ideas enough time to see if they would work or not. Kroc didn’t give up it was like he was forcing thins to work and in the end it all worked out for the better. Sometimes you have to have that aggression and mindset to just see things through and not give up.
  2. Honestly I don’t think that the brothers should have sold to Ray but instead I think they should have just been more on-board with the ideas and things he wanted to bring to the table. He seen the future not just the now and that’s why he flourished because he was always a step ahead and with the brothers it seems as if they just didn’t want to take risk to see what could happen. Kroc gave the brothers a good deal for him honestly because he knows he will see way more than what he gave them, so it won’t be a problem to make it back. In my opinion the brothers should have asked for more and been more stern about it. Ray Kroc pushed them around in the end deal.
  3. The local stores made money off of how quickly they got the orders out. So basically they were making money off of the brothers speed system, a lot of other local businesses were trying to copy the brothers as well and the system actually worked. That’s why they were able to make money off of it.
  4. Kroc made money by purchasing the land that the businesses were on. So when he owns the land he also owns whatever is on the land so he will also be making money off of the McDonald’s as well. His way of making money was different because he wasn’t only making money off of the restaurants sales and the speed system but now he was also making money off of the land and holding value property. So he was also on the real estate side of things.
  5. This film does change my view on McDonalds because that was pretty messed up what Ray Kroc did to those brothers and it’s kind of like the McDonald’s around now is just a fake of an original.

The Founder

  • The difference between Ray Kroc and the McDonald’s brothers is that Ray Kroc had a vision for the McDonald’s business to grow through a franchise network and would continue to be persistent until he reached success. Kroc saw the McDonald’s burger stand as innovative and unique. The McDonald’s brothers were the first restaurant Kroc has ever seen to have disposable packaging and served food within 30 seconds of placing your order. In the scene when Ray Kroc first went to California and had a McDonald’s burger for the first time you can see that he was observing the efficiency and friendly service while also observing the many people enjoying the food. Kroc saw how popular the restaurant was and saw the vision of McDonald’s having the potential to be expanded throughout the country. Whereas the McDonald’s brothers already tried once and failed at trying to make McDonald’s a franchise. The other locations weren’t staying up to specific codes. It was difficult for the brothers to enforce their high standards amongst the other locations.
  • It’s highly debatable whether or not the McDonald’s brothers made the right decision to sell their company to Ray Kroc. It depends on how you look at it. However, I feel that Maurice McDonald was too naïve and not firm enough when it came to handling business. People like that often get swindled easily. Ray Kroc recognized that and used that against the brothers. Even though Kroc treated the brothers horribly if he didn’t involve himself in McDonald’s it would’ve never evolved and expanded globally. Most likely you have a McDonald’s in your neighborhood. It was a good thing for McDonald’s when Ray Kroc bought the company because it would’ve never prevailed to the level that it did. But I think it was wrong and disrespectful to offer the brothers only 1% when they supplied the idea. The McDonald’s brothers deserved better than what they got in return for their brilliant idea.
  • The McDonald’s brothers were perfectionists when it came to the quality of their food and service. They were very particular about the way their burgers were served and how fast they can serve orders to customers. This kept the customers coming back as well as spreading the word about McDonald’s excellent service which helped make the local store make money.
  • Ray Kroc meets his new business partner Harry and advised him that he should purchase the land and lease it to the franchisees. By being the franchisee’s landlord, he could obtain bank financing for the land, enjoy a consistent income stream, and maintain control over the franchisee’s quality.
  • My mind about McDonald’s hasn’t changed but after watching this film I felt so sad for the McDonald’s brothers but from a business standpoint, Ray Kroc worked very hard and almost lost his home because he believed in McDonald’s. Kroc attempted to ask for an extra 1.5% which in my opinion wasn’t greedy but after the brother declined Kroc’s request is what made him commit to his dirty tactics.

The Founder

  1. What makes Ray Kroc and the brothers different from each other?
  2. Do you think the McDonald’s brothers did the right thing by selling out to Ray Kroc? Did Ray Kroc give the brothers a good deal?
  3. How did the local store franchisees make money?
  4. How did Kroc make money? How was that different than the franchisees, running the local stores?
  5. Does this film change your view of McDonald’s?
  1. Ray Kroc and the McDonald brothers were the polar opposites of eachother. Ray was hungry for success and wealth at any cost, whereas the McDonald brotheres were contented with ensuring that any succes they had was achieved without sacrificing the quality of what they have invented. They were not interested in quantity but was fixated on the quality of everthing that had anything to do with their restaurant. Depending on who you speak with, Ray was seen as an aggressive predator or a savvy businessman. The McDonald brothers would be viewed as passive businessmen or two silly brothers who were not ready for the world of business and quite contented with remaining in their little world
  2. The brothers did the right thing by doing business with Ray Kroc, but made a huge mistake by not hiring professionals with foresight and knowledge to guide them in the process. Their lawyer sat at the table and allowed them to make a “shake hand” deal on the most lucrative part of the contract, instead of negotiating or walking away. Kroc did not have any knowlwdge or expertise in anything remotely related to what he was undertaking but he had a team that did. Although hiring a financial expert and a lawyer seems to have happened out of sheer luck the fact is that they offered him the guidance and expertise needed to succeed and he followed along, resulting in him being able to expand and profit the way he did. In contrast the McDonald brothers sought to do the deal with an incompetent lawyer resulting in a very bad deal that even took the rights to their name.
  3. The local francisees made money from selling goods, namely food and drinks.
  4. Kroc made his money by selling franchises but the bulk of his profit came from expanding his business to include Real Estate. He bought land in areas he identified for a franchise then leased the land to the franchisee’s therby ensuring an steady stream of income regardless of how well the franchisee’s business’ were doing.
  5. The film did not necessarily change my view of the Mc Donald’s Restaurant, however I cannot help but think about the circumstances under which the McDonald brother’s lost their business and ultimately even the use of their name. While I think Ray was a swindler I think the brother’s should have taken the necessary steps to ensure they had the best deal from this business venture.

The Founder

  • The brothers had made so many risky decisions before having a successful business. Which is why they didn’t want to expand because they felt comfortable and knew nobody would run the business like how they do. They were happy with what they had since in the past they had many business that didn’t work out. Ray was a salesman, he knew from the start that McDonald’s had so much potential which is why he wanted to be involved. He was willing to risk it all for the company. He felt that the brothers were close minded when it came to business.
  • I think they did right selling their company to Ray. Ray was already making so many decisions without their constant, people didn’t really have any knowledge of the brothers, everyone thought that Ray was the founder and he was already acting like he was. They probably could’ve been left with nothing if they didn’t sell. Ray didn’t give the brothers a good deal, they received their 1 million each but never received their 1 percent since it was never documented in a contract.
  • The speedee system helped the franchisees to make money. The speedee system helped them serve their so many customers quickly, People went up to the window and told them their order and then they quickly got their food. They didn’t have to wait a long time like in other restaurants. The more food they served the more profit they made.
  • Ray started to realize that he wasn’t making so much money because of how the contacted was structured. He then met Harry who told him he would start making more money if he bought the land where they wanted the business and then later lease the land to the franchise. Ray made profits because of Real Estate and the franchisees made profit because of their food.
  • It didn’t change my views on McDonalds but it was definitely was an eye opener. You shouldn’t fully trust people that you make business with. Everything should always be in a contract never take someones word for it. Maybe greedy decisions will always make you money ? maybe not. But in this situation greediness did win.

The Founder

Ray Kroc was an American businessman who knew the gains and losses of the business world on a 1st hand basis and was willing to take those risks. He was willing to put his personal home up for a loan to invest in his dream or scheme as his wife would refer to. He saw the Mc Donald brothers establishment as a huge picture of success built completely from American ingenuity. Ray developed bargaining tools from going door to door as a salesman and utilized those skills to communicate effectively to individuals and conveyed his beliefs nationally to those who also were seeking a piece of the American dream. Unfortunately, the McDonald brothers did not realize how savvy Ray Kroc was and in the long run, lost their brand to the powerful corporation He built right under their noses.

The McDonald brothers knew that they had created a powerful adversary in Ray Kroc and were literally outgunned in their dispute for the franchise. At the time, they settled for $2.4 million dollars to be divided equally between themselves. In the major scope of the business and its holdings, this amount was just a peek into the vast capital vault that the McDonalds corporation had stockpiled. They were left with no choice because neither brother could afford to stabilize a long -term court battle and was forced to accept the terms Ray Kroc offered.

The local store franchisees earned revenue from food sales. The McDonald brothers created a system that served customers in under 30 seconds compared to other restaurants who served their guests in 30 minutes. This high-speed system was adopted in all the locations and was reacted by the public as “fast food”. Even they way the food was packaged was new as this was not a traditional restaurant but more of a place your order, pick up to go service.

Under the advisement of Harry Sonnenberg, Ray Kroc purchased the real estate needed to build a McDonalds location. At that point, he became a landlord and was leasing the land to each new McDonalds franchise investor. From his real estate earnings, Ray Kroc’s income grew at an exponential rate. Unless the local franchise owner held enough money to buy the land, location and brand fees, at one time, a substantial portion of their earnings was needed to pay any leasing fees. The remainder is used to pay salaries and restock any necessary materials for their location.

No, I still love McDonalds although it’s not as good as in the past. I feel bad that the McDonald brothers were unable to create a better deal with Ray to ensure a successful and long-lasting relationship prior to him cornering the franchise and its market. The McDonald brothers envisioned a clean family-oriented business, while Ray envisioned a monopoly. It’s unfortunate but in the real world, businesses are divided, sold and stole from their original proprietors daily with money, power and legal influence as the main players on the field.
