- What do you think is the most demotivating part of Harper’s job?
The fact that Harper is working more than she has to. Due to the amount of extra work she has, it is probably causing her to stress a lot, feel exhausted, and that is when a feeling of quitting comes to mind. Even worst is that Harper is doing more work for the same benefits instead of receiving a raise or some perks.
- If you were an HR manager meeting with Harper’s supervisor, David, what advice would you give to help them re-engage Harper?
I’ll talk to David to see if we can keep Harper because she likes working for the company. We have to understand what is causing her problems. She can’t handle the amount of work, so what makes sense is to give her less amount for work and probably give her a small raise because she is a good worker and we want to keep her.
- What would be the downside of losing Harper as an employee?
Harper has been a worker for four years; we will need to look for another employee if she leaves. It is a waste of time, resources, and money mainly because this new employee has to adapt to the job. So basically, losing Harper is a downside for the company because she is a worker, mainly because she liked working and was doing a good job.
This is a good one Tomas, but what if you cut the work you are giving her and then you can’t find anyone else to pick up the work? How would you go about it then?
These are insightful and concise points on the topic, however, I believe that you could specify what type of strategy the company could use to help the situation between Harper and David. Also, as Amauri stated, what would happen if the company did cut her work but couldn’t find anyone else to do the same amount of work she’s doing with the same amount of experience. I believe it’s not the best strategy because she’s fine with her workload, but she’s not fine with the recognition she receives. She’d want more benefits more the work she does and I believe there are other strategies to work around this problem.
Tomas, I agree with your post. Harper is stressed and under a lot of pressure due to the drastic differences in management and an increase in workload. Jose would help his staff complete workloads while David does not assist with work. Neither David or HR have acknowledged the fact that Harper has had to pick up the slack since Jose’s departure and it is not fair. She deserves to be rewarded and is justified by deciding for her own mental sanity that it may be time to find another job.
I agree, Harper taking on so much work causing her to stress out and they aren’t pay her more for all they extra work she is doing which sucks. David should talk to Harper more because she is the one that had to take someones else responsibilities, I feel like she should also be a priority to David.
I do not think we should give her less work without an indept conversation as the complaint seems to show signs of a deeper issue. It appears as if Harper feels there is a lack of communication and she is not being valued or listened to. I am sure she was aware there is usually an extra burden when there is a new hire, however this new expectation of a bigger workload or the path moving forward with a new supervisor was not communicated. This shows a lack of care on David’s part.
