The brothers had made so many risky decisions before having a successful business. Which is why they didn’t want to expand because they felt comfortable and knew nobody would run the business like how they do. They were happy with what they had since in the past they had many business that didn’t work out. Ray was a salesman, he knew from the start that McDonald’s had so much potential which is why he wanted to be involved. He was willing to risk it all for the company. He felt that the brothers were close minded when it came to business.
I think they did right selling their company to Ray. Ray was already making so many decisions without their constant, people didn’t really have any knowledge of the brothers, everyone thought that Ray was the founder and he was already acting like he was. They probably could’ve been left with nothing if they didn’t sell. Ray didn’t give the brothers a good deal, they received their 1 million each but never received their 1 percent since it was never documented in a contract.
The speedee system helped the franchisees to make money. The speedee system helped them serve their so many customers quickly, People went up to the window and told them their order and then they quickly got their food. They didn’t have to wait a long time like in other restaurants. The more food they served the more profit they made.
Ray started to realize that he wasn’t making so much money because of how the contacted was structured. He then met Harry who told him he would start making more money if he bought the land where they wanted the business and then later lease the land to the franchise. Ray made profits because of Real Estate and the franchisees made profit because of their food.
It didn’t change my views on McDonalds but it was definitely was an eye opener. You shouldn’t fully trust people that you make business with. Everything should always be in a contract never take someones word for it. Maybe greedy decisions will always make you money ? maybe not. But in this situation greediness did win.
Yes, it was so sad to see that the brothers didn’t get any recognition for creating the restaurant. But as we know not everything is fair in life. Ray was acting like the founder, neglecting his contract and their vision about successfully operated business. They knew they made a mistake hiring him but it was too late to deal with him. Therefore they sold the business.
The other cruel thing he did was that he opened a new McDonalds in San Bernardino, right across the street from their location. Which made them go out of business after few years.
I agree with Maria’s statement. It was hearbreaking for the McDonald brothers to watch their dream and hard work get stolen from their posession. They underestimated how determined Ray was to make the business a success but could not stop his persistence and methodical tactics of salesmanship. The more successful Ray became, the more ruthless his demeanor became as he inevitably divorced his first wife Ethel and later married his franchise partner’s wife, Joan.
I definitely agree with Ray just a little bit on the part with the brothers being a bit close minded they should have seen the bigger picture to things and taken a few risk at least. The biggest risk they took the whole movie was Ray Kroc.
I myself had a bad experience with making a deal with someone and not having any agreement to prove it. In the long run I ended up losing the fight and it cost me. I believe any type of transaction, or agreement should be noted and signed to clarify any questions. Especially when it comes to your hard earned work and money, there should be a high level of care and security.
