Digital accessibility in education ensures that all students can interact with, understand, and navigate course materials. Integrating a few basic practices can be a first step towards ensuring that all students can engage with course materials on the first day of class. While designed to provide equitable access to individuals with disabilities, these practices enhance usability, flexibility, and the overall learning experience for all students, regardless of their background or ability.
In this workshop, we’ll introduce the foundational concepts and practices that you need to create accessible Brightspace course sites, Word documents, PDF files, PowerPoint presentations, and multimedia. We’ll also introduce the Ally accessibility checker in Brightspace, which you can use to review materials that you have already included in your courses. Please bring course materials or questions that you would like to share and discuss with the group.
With awareness and preparation, you can design materials, assignments, and classroom experiences that support learners with diverse abilities, needs, and interests, fostering a classroom environment where all students can thrive!
