Details

In this workshop, we will consider how speaking and listening asynchronously can support connection and care in the classroom. We will explore methods for incorporating low-stakes audio and video student engagement and activity in our courses to encourage and foster human connection and expression. If we consider what it means to listen – and what it means to express ourselves through speaking – we get to the core of what any course can gain from incorporating audio and video activity and engagement. When students use their faculties of speech to explain the concepts and texts that they are learning about in their courses, they tap into their inherent abilities to express themselves and exercise their facilities to think through concepts and express themselves in real time.

Brightspace offers some simple tools that can facilitate this type of communication. During our hour together, we’ll discuss our experiences using audio in the classroom, consider how all kinds of disciplines can incorporate audio into their classrooms, and see examples of the tools that can support these activities, both on the Brightspace platform and other supplementary tools. Participants are encouraged to bring to this workshop their ideas for incorporating low-stakes audio and video assignments in the classroom to discuss and explore with their peers.
