Post-Impressionism was a movement that came from the rejection of the Impressionism movement. This movement saw a new focus on the artist’s perception of subjects, and a spiritual exploration that led to personalized styles from the prominent artists of the movement. These artists included Cezanne, Van Gogh, Gaugin, and Seurat. Their work varied in technique, but the common thread could be identified by vibrant and pure colors placed consistently next to each other to express the combination of a refined approach to color and composition, as well as the presence of contemporary life with spiritual aspects.

Post-Impressionism was the correction of Impressionism, artist from this category felt art during the Impressionism period were too intellectually shallow and artist did not share a unified approach but used Impressionism as a springboard for developing their own individual styles. Artist such as Georges Seurat, Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin used a different technique of complementary colors to sometimes create an illusion of another color, these artist used multidirectional strokes of almost pure colors which came to be known as divisionism or pointillism.

Post-impression emerged as a reaction to the impressionist movement. Artists wanted to emphasize feelings as opposed to real life replication. Some of the hallmarks of the post-impressionistic movement are the use of vivid colors, a real life subject matter and visible brush strokes. Some of the artists we discussed were Paul Gauguin, Georges Seurat, and Vincent Van Gogh.
