Lecture 9 Reflection (Japan and Korea) March 26

Write a paragraph reflecting on what you take away from today’s lecture. What was one thing that stood out to you or interested you? What was one thing that was a bit difficult to understand and you’d like clarified (a question you have which you did not get to ask during class).

The design of the Japanese castle was very fascinating for me. I love design and secrets. To see the smart traps and defense in warfare is exciting. I would like to have known more about defense structure in the Western castles but I know that is not today’s subject. Wabi-Sabi is also very interesting to me. I have read about it before but your way of explaining it and the use of examples were very helpful. The small door to the tea ceremony was very smart as well to be used as an equalizer. I love that idea and plan to use it in the future. Everything else was very clear to understand.

Something that I took away from this lecture was that when they build the Japanese castles they put a lot of thought into it. From the big castle that stands out from the outside to the traps that awaits any enemy’s from the inside. Something that interest me was the fact that the castle is held by stone ramp part. It’s crazy to think the castle is just being held up by nothing but well placed stones and gravity. Something else that was interesting was the whole garden thing and what it represents with the whole meditation stuff and how they take care of it. But my question is since it’s just dry landscape, how do they protect it when it’s snowing or raining?

Something that interested me is the difference in the Japanese and Western castles. The difference in the Himeji castle and Bodiam castle shows the contrast in what the lordship of the two regions valued. It seems like the Himeji castle showcases status and opulence and the Bodiam castle is about defense and functionality. Something that wasn’t mentioned was Bushido, which was the code of values samurai followed in these times. I wonder how similar it was to Zen Buddhism in terms of respect and honor, and if there were sects of samurai and citizens who preferred one over the other.

A few things that I took away from todays lecture was learning that Buddism is an asian phenomenon. I also found it interesting learning about the Buddhist Shakamuri. He was a prince from India who lived a privileged life. For 28years he received everything he needed and wanted from his wealthy father. Even though he lived this life he realized that there was more serious things in the world like illnesses and sickness. He decided to leave his palace and venture out to understand more about the world by starving himself. He then realized that starving wasn’t the way to understand and so he ate and began to meditate until he got the Enlightenment. He noticed that a person can only reach the Enlightenment when you completely discontinue from the world which included, pain, happiness and sadness. The Enlightenment meant dispatching ones feelings from the world.

My major takeaway from the lecture was the influence of Buddhism on Japanese art and gardens. I know a little bit of information on meditation, but not exactly the differences between the types of meditations. I loved the Japanese zen gardens and I can really appreciate the process of just zoning out and raking the sand. I think a ritual like that is really beautiful. One thing I hadn’t quite gotten was the door to the tea ceremony being small on purpose. I must have missed when you explained that they are small in order to not allow weapons and to make both parties bow down low to come in. Was the door size meant to be more for physical security or more like a metaphorical way to humble oneself on entry?

In this Lesson what stood out for me was Buddhism about how there was a prince who lived in Indian and he notice age , illnesses and death in his country so he had to look for answers . Throughout his search he found enlightenment from the four noble truths . Also was on the two schools of zen where if u couldn’t concentrate they would hit you so you would concentrate i found that shocking. What I didn’t understand was the edo period about the social hierarchy .

There are so many things that were interesting in the lecture. One was about the gardens, how people are doing a fabulous job by giving sand a shape, turning the send into curves and it looks really amazing. One more fascinating thing is Japanese castle.I also learned about the castle that stands out from the outside to the traps that awaits any enemies from the inside. I also found out in the lecture that Buddhism is an Asian phenomenon. It was very clear how the Buddhist found enlightenment. How he discontinued himself from the world,it’s really impressive.I also have very little idea about meditation ,but i also learned about that.

One take away from the lecture was the learning the culture of japan, their architecture from the 1395-1869, the art during that time period, also the history which talked about the government. As well as the religion which was Buddhism. One thing that stood out to me/was interesting to me was the castles by far. The castle were so amazing, the designs were phenomenal. The colors on the castles fit so perfectly and I could’ve have seen this in person. It must’ve taken a long time and man power to create a master piece like that. Props to the architects who created this. I have no questions everything was clear.

In this lecture, there were so many interesting architectures from 1395-1869 during that time. I’m interested in looking at the history of Japanese culture since I was studying different religions like Buddism. The most astonishing point from this lecture was the castle. It looks beautiful with architects helped created the building.

What really surprised me from this lecture was the landscape painting “panoramic view of the diamond mountain” by Jeong Seon he painted that using his imagination trying to figure out how it would look from an upper view. Also the story about the prince when everyone tried to keep him hiding away from reality to keep him in a bubble basically so he wouldn’t see how badly the citizens were.
