Are you new to teaching ACL (ACR prior to 2023) 150/ Literacy in American Society? Or perhaps you have taught the course but are searching for more authentic materials? Perhaps you currently use a textbook but would like to transition to Open Educational Resources (OER) and to Zero Textbook Cost (ZTC) resources?

This course hub website contains OER/ZTC (Open Educational Resources/Zero Textbook Cost) resources for faculty teaching Literacy in American Society (ACL 150) at the Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC). These resources are freely available for use by BMCC faculty and beyond.

This work was created by Ewa Barnes, as part of the BMCC Open Education Initiative, which is co-led by the A. Philip Randolph Library and the Center for Excellence in Teaching, Learning, and Scholarship (CETLS). The BMCC Open Education Initiative is supported by the CUNY Office of Library Services (OLS) and funded by the New York State Department of Education.

The content of this course hub has been divided into suggested “topics.” Each topic has a dedicated page with multiple posts, which include assignments, activities, PowerPoints, and other relevant materials. The “assignments” section includes essay and other assignments. The “resources” section provides external links to other materials.

Thank you to all Academic Literacy and Linguistics faculty who have contributed materials to this site: Elizabeth Robb, James Michel, Patrick Flink and Shane McConnell. This site is part of a broader effort to encourage openness and collaboration among instructors.

This site is administered by Prof. Ewa Barnes, Lecturer at the Borough of Manhattan Community College’s Academic Literacy and Linguistics Department. Feel free to contact me with any resources, comments and questions at ebarnes@bmcc.cuny.edu.
