Week 11: Literacy and Gender

What is happening in ACR 150:

Post 7 (last one!) due by Tuesday, April 12th–don’t forget to reply to classmates!

If you attend class on 4/12 (via Zoom, synchronous), then:

  • read Gender Equity Begins with Literacy
  • watch TEDTalk
  • Take quiz 5 on Blackboard
  • work on essay draft

If you are absent on 4/12, then review all of this week’s course materials + take quiz 5 on Blackboard.

Everyone: submit essay draft under Peer Review on our Discussion Board by Tuesday, April 26th (the usual 11:59pm deadline).

Spring Break: April 15 – April 22 (Enjoy!)

Activity 1: What is the connection between literacy and gender?

Activity 2: Read Gender Equity Begins with Literacy

Activity 3: Read Disrupting Dichotomies for Social Change.

This is a longer scholarly article and a bigger time investment. If you only have time for a smaller dose, I’d suggest reading the first two and the last two pages, to get an overview of the issues related to gender and literacy, and to read about some recommended steps to improve the inequality that exists here.

Activity 4: Watch Why Kids Need To Lean About Gender and Sexuality / Lindsay Amer

Activity 5: Take Quiz 5 on Blackboard.

Activity 6: Work on essay draft. Submit your draft by the end of this week’s unit.

Your draft should include:

  • a statement of purpose (describe the essay option you selected and add relevant information)
  • a description of your research methods
  • a working central idea
  • supporting evidence/ your data
  • your interpretation of evidence/ data
  • a reference to at least one course material
  • what you think you need to do to improve the draft

Your draft should be imperfect

because this is work in progress and even the best writers cannot produce a masterpiece on their first attempt

Activity 7: Review research essay options and the steps you need to take to submit your draft.
