In the beginning I always thought that literacy meant to be able to read but I was completely wrong as I missed so many parts to this word.
Based on activities 4 and 5, my definition of literacy would be being able to read and write which allows us to connect with books, people and things. All of this affects us by allowing us to learn more about certain things, the ability to talk to one another, and the ability to express feelings to one another.
John Trischitti defines literacy as the ability to read. He focuses on the ability “to understand or produce written information.” He says that eliminating illiteracy would help break hunger, poverty, and crime. John Trischitti also talks about how kids who do not have access to books will have a basic need that isn’t met, similar to food and housing. He mentions that it adds a sense of belonging to something. You are kept out of communication and opportunities and literacy gives you those opportunities. It is a “foundational skill.”
I would have to agree with John Trischitti and how he defines literacy because if people aren’t literate and wouldn’t be able to read or write it would be a problem for them finding jobs and going to school. Being able to read and write allows you a lot more freedom and a lot of benefits in the world today.
