One assignment that I selected is the research essay. My task was to analyze how members of a minority community have been affected by the institutionalization of literacy in the US. I made research on a minority group and examined their access to education. I used the BMCC database to find my sources. I selected the Asian group because I was curious about learning about their literacy practices. One challenge I faced was not having enough details about their access to education, it was more based on the literacy practices. Most of the articles I found mentioned that Asian children get involved in reading and writing most of the time but they don’t specify what activities they use. The things I learned is that regardless of economical status and language barriers Asian parents still get involved in their children’s education. This allows you to see other people’s problems so that you can raise awareness.
