6 word memoir: Please excuse my dear Aunt Sally.
- Literacy is the ability to communicate and interact with other people and the world around us.
- Literacy seems to be a broader concept with a lot of different subsections. There’s alphabetical literacy, financial literacy, civil literacy, and many more. There are also a lot of different elements that influence literacy like socioeconomic status and unequal access to educational resources.
- John Trischitti defines literacy as the lack of ability to read- as a solvable problem. He doesn’t believe it’s a societal or cultural defect. I don’t agree with him. While literacy isn’t inherently a societal or cultural problem, societal and cultural problems directly affect obstacles to more widespread literacy. To separate the two makes it harder to see the patterns of how our own societal and cultural problems affect the, admittedly, solvable problem of literacy.
