Szwed’s five elements of literacy are text, context, function, participation, and motivation. motivation is the persistence to engage in reading and writing. and based on the motivation different degrees of skills can follow with it.
Szwed recommends studying by observing and understanding individuals and their literacy techniques and their process of reading and writing. His reasoning for these studying techniques is that the interaction with everyday events in their life, something as simple as reading and understanding a street sign is important literacy as well.
Szwed says “we must come to terms with the lives of people without patronizing them” I believe he means that we must not judge people with the way they read or write rather help them get better at it. If we help them get better in literacy that can help everyone all around.
If I was a high school literacy teacher in the Bronx, I would introduce my class to readings that correlate with their backgrounds, interests, and stuff that would just feel common to them. I would introduce them to different types of readings to see which ones they like a I would show them different readings and writings all around the world.
According to Baker, the 4 characteristics of literacy we should use are semiotic, public, transitory, and product oriented. The sociocultural perspective is that literacy changes over time. Back then, people described literacy as reading the newspaper or simple directional notes. Now, literacy has so many different meanings and forms.
I learned that literacy is the ability to read and write while Orality is about verbal communication. It’s learning literacy through speech.
Our Literacy is shaped by our community by how we are raised, the books we read as kids, our school system, and how much they cared to inform us of the right way of literacy. All of this plays a role if you speak multiple languages as well. If you’re not reading the correct amount of books or interacting with people than you aren’t getting the language fully unlike people who are.
Literacy standards are created by culture. That helps the privileged group succeed. The cultural bias is assessed by having it cater to the privileged group.
