1. Does the author clearly state the purpose of the essay? Explain.

The author states that she gave 5 participants a literacy test (State of Lousiana literacy test, 1964)
3. Does the author state the central idea of the essay? Explain.
literacy tests are not used to determine someone’s literacy level, instead, it is used to determine someone’s rights.

7. Is the essay well-organized? Explain.
yes, I think the essay was well organized it was clear and easy to read.
8. Are the grammar, syntax and vocabulary consistent and appropriate with a college-level essay? Explain.
yes, I think the grammar, syntax, and vocabulary are consistent and appropriate, although I recommend using Grammarly, or writing on Microsoft word since the program gives suggestions for vocabulary and is accurate in the sense of correcting grammar. (or at least that is what I do since I tend to misspell words most of the time, and sometimes write the same word twice.
9. What are the strengths of this draft? Explain.
the essay provides enough evidence to support the central idea. the essay is clear and easy to follow.
10. Do you have any other comments or suggestions?
I think incorporating the term hegemonic tool to describe the literacy test would fit in the introduction and conclusion of this research paper. ( see the class notebook to get a better understanding).
another suggestion I can make is instead of just writing the literacy test question number, writing the question as well can give better insight to the reader of what the participants think and feel about that specific question.
Hi Sophia I enjoyed your Draft and the comments the participants made were a great. and how you showed their experience.
1. The purpose of this essay is to show how the literacy test back then was unfair and it was more of a way to discriminate against African Americans and not give them voting rights rather than being a way to test your literacy.
2. The research method is how the participants do on the literacy test and if they pass.
3. The central idea is to test the participants on the Louisiana voter literacy test and see how they do and also show how unfair it was to African Americans and how it was just a way to stop them from voting.
4. Sophia you support your central idea well with the reactions and comments of your participants and how you tie it back to how unfair it was for African Americans.
5. Sophia I enjoyed the way you tied your participant’s comments and feelings to show the evidence in your argument and how this was not a test of literacy but just discrimination.
6. Sophia used the Louisiana voter literacy test that was in the course material.
7. Sophia I think your essay is well organized with you stating your argument very clearly about the unfairness of this literacy test. and adding the feelings and comments that the participants felt while taking the test fit together nicely.
8. I think the grammar and vocabulary are clear and it is a well-written college essay draft and I understood the main topic.
9. The strength of this essay is the voices of the participants knowing what they were feeling and the comments they were saying makes a connection to how someone probably felt taking this for the first time.
10. The only comment I have is that I would like to know the questions they were looking at not just the number of the question but write out the question in the essay.
