When I first heard of literacy I thought that it was the ability to read and write which is not wrong but then I started to realize that it was more to it then just reading and writing.
Based on activities 4 and 5, my definition of literacy is not only the ability to read and write, but also to speak and listen in a way that lets us communicate effectively and make sense of the world. I found out that it it was put as being able to read and write with some different kinds based on the topic of literacy.
John Trischitti defines literacy as being able to read. He focuses on the ability ‘To understand or produce written information”. He claims that it prevents the spread of hunger, poverty, and crime. He also talks about how kids do not have access to books will have a basic need that isn’t met, similar to food and housing.
I agree with Trischitti because literacy can have a big impact in peoples lives and as he stated, if someone able to read they can change their own lives, families,communities, and cities for the better. Reading is the foundation of other skills and anyone can obtain it with time and commitment. If more people are literate there will be more job opportunities and many other things in life
