The black community has not been given the same opportunities as white people, literacy included. While outright racism like not being hired because of race has decreased drastically, there are still issues with educational opportunities, which impacts literacy. Schools in predominantly black areas are often underfunded and understaffed. These schools often lack the resources to give students a proper education.
Literacy is used as a hegemonic tool against students. In “With COVID-19, The African-American Literacy Crisis Will Get Much Worse,” the author mentions reading benchmarks and how students that don’t meet requirements are held back. Reading benchmarks and scoring are often held to the standards of students in a specific state or country. If students that don’t have the same resources as others are held to the same standards, they’re obviously not going to do as well.
I expected the tests to be completely random, but some of the questions didn’t even to seem to be related to literacy levels. There were questions about shapes and drawing shapes that were supposed to be “engulfed” in another shape. The questions seemed doable to me, but then I realized that they were supposed to be done in 10 minutes, which, given how overcomplicated the test is and how the literacy levels would probably be lower than mine, is just absurd.
I think there’s only so much we can do- spread awareness and educate others, but it’s up to school districts and the government to provide funding. They’ve shown that they don’t care enough to change this, but I think the only thing that society could do to change that would be to make a huge movement because the government never seems to listen unless something incredibly dramatic happens.
“With COVID-19, The African-American Literacy Crisis Will Get Much Worse” describes what can be done to improve schools. Lowering class sizes, making students feel safer, and showing students that they should actually care about their education.
