- According to Szwed, the five components of literacy are text, context, function, participation, and motivation. Context is important in reading since it is the situations that create the setting for an event, statement, or idea in ways that can be understood. Without context, many novels, poems, and even films would be misinterpreted.
- Szwed recommends ethnography. He says that it is the only way to discover what literacy is and what makes literacy measurable.

- Literacy standards are often developed in reaction to cultural or temporal changes. In Elizabeth Baker’s work “Sociocultural Perspectives,” for example. Which believes that literacy evolves with civilization. And, at the moment, society is entirely concentrated on social media.
