  1. According to Szwed, the five components of literacy are text, context, function, participation, and motivation. Context is important in reading since it is the situations that create the setting for an event, statement, or idea in ways that can be understood. Without context, many novels, poems, and even films would be misinterpreted.
  2. Szwed recommends ethnography. He says that it is the only way to discover what literacy is and what makes literacy measurable.
  3. To avoid pain for both sides, he implies that we must accept individuals and not pressure them to do whatever they do not want to do. People who do not desire to learn anything lack motivation, which is a critical element of literacy. This will cause them to learn more slowly.
  4. I’d start by explaining what ethnography is because Szwed believes it’s critical to understand literacy. Then I will observe the students because Szwed’s style is more observational in my opinion, and I will assist them based on my observations.
  5. The sociocultural perspective of literacy, according to Elizabeth Baker, is that literacy is considered as an “artifact of culture,” and literacy changes as culture changes or develops. Baker suggests that we use the four literacy qualities of semiotic, public, transitory, and product-oriented literacy because it allows us to write and read more freely and less restricted.
  6. Literacy is generally defined as the ability to read and write, whereas orality refers to the method of communication practiced by cultures with little or no exposure to writing.
  7. Our literacy practices are heavily influenced by the communities in which we come from and as Szwed states “focus should be on the school and its relation to the community’s needs and wishes, on the school’s knowledge of these needs and wishes, and on the community’s resources.” I agree with this because I feel like there is no way a person can grow without the community’s influence.
  8. Literacy standards are often developed in reaction to cultural or temporal changes. In Elizabeth Baker’s work “Sociocultural Perspectives,” for example. Which believes that literacy evolves with civilization. And, at the moment, society is entirely concentrated on social media.
