Describe one identity you have that you are most proud of and explain why. Describe one identity that you are either not proud of or struggle with. Please explain why you are not proud of this identity or struggle with it.
Identity is strange. It is formed by many different factors, such as the environmental factors and, how the family brought up the child, nurture. The culture also affects the identity is a bit hard to grasp for some. My identity comes from my family and the environment where I grew up. One part of my identity that I am now growing to love is asking for help. At times, I would not want to ask for help because it would make me feel vulnerable, but now, as I have grown, I can see why it is positive.
After reading the article “The Potential and Promise of Latino Students,” discuss one new thing you learned about the Latino population. Be specific and explain your thoughts and reactions regarding what you read and understood.
I learned that the students start school much later than the students do in the United States. This is due to the students helping their families raise funds for their families and trying to ensure they can have the bare necessities. Another thing that I have learned is that students of Latin descent have language barriers, especially if they are new to their surroundings.
Choose one of the videos assigned this week. What are your thoughts and reactions to what was presented in the video? What is the main argument of the video? What reasons are used to support the idea?
The main idea in the video, “What Being Hispanic and Latinx Means in the United States,” is that the Latin community and the Hispanics want to be treated equally and the same as the rest. So many are discriminated against and have issues with the language due to a language barrier. This causes people, as some people will call Karens and Kevins, to emerge and cause so much discomfort. Everyone needs to be treated with respect, something that some find challenging. Once you let the community in, they will treat you like family. So many people see the Latin community as a community that is lower than themselves but never take the step back to see the people and the value that they bring.
