Literacy is the ability to read, write, and speak in a way that lets us communicate effectively. I see literacy as much more than just communication. To me literacy is the foundation of life because we need it to learn about anything else. Before you can do anything you have to be literate because it helps you a lot. John Trischitti defines literacy as the tool to stop spread of hunger, poverty, and crime. According to John Trischitti, literacy is important because it can break “harsh social cycles’. He says “If a child is not reading proficiently by the 4th grade, they have a 78% chance of not catching up.” This illustrates that literacy is the base of education and very important for a child’s success in school and future. He also adds that no one factor can drastically shape a person’s chance of success like the way literacy has an impact. I agree with John Trischitti because literacy is the base of everything you want to learn in life. Without literacy people can’t expand their knowledge. In addition to that the statistics also prove that most people that receive government assistance are functionally illiterate or can’t read with proficiency.
