  1. Literacy is generally defined as the ability to read and write.
  1. To me, literacy is deeper than communication, and more so an understanding. This understanding is groomed through words, writing, sounds, and tone. When I think of my ancestors and how they communicated, I wonder what literacy looked like then. To me, literacy not only helps us communicate, but to understand the bigger photo. Communication is the surface, while understanding is the core. Through my research, I learned literacy is measured through the ability to speak, and listen in a way that lets us communicate effectively and make sense of the world.

In the short video TEDxTalk by John Trischitti “Literacy is the Answer.” John Trischitti defines literacy as the ability to read and understand written information. Trischitti emphasizes the importance of literacy through the many components directly affected by illiteracy. In example, Trischitti enlightens the audience that if a child is not reading proficiently by the 4th grade, they have a 78% chance of not catching up. This information moved me and sparked a lot of questions. While so many factors can directly impact a child from learning at an appropriate rate, I wonder what potential problems arise for a child in the 22% percent who are able to catch up. All in all, Trischitti emphasizes the importance of literacy as it has a consistent relationship to poverty, performance, government assistance, and juvenile. I strongly agree with Trischitti’s general message of how literacy can impact our lives from such a tender age. In a short story, I have a younger brother who’s teacher thought he would learn better in a special education class. My mom became extremely emotional, she came to my brother and I’s school, and threw a fit in the principal’s office for my brother to stay in a full class, because special education implied he was “slow” or “dumb” while my brother has not ever fell victim to the statitics of juvenile, government assistance, or poverty, his demeanor and how he viewed his intelligence was low.
