Summary

What did you learn about new literacies from this week’s video “The essential elements of digital literacies” and from the reading “Dawn of new literacies”?

From the video “The essential elements of digital literacies” I learned that memes could be considered as new forms of literacies. They would be categorized as digital and media literacy. Creating and understanding memes often involves visual elements, such as images, graphics, and text overlays. According to “Dawn of New Literacies” it is important for teachers to be able to adapt to these new forms of literacies so the students can learn better, and educating is easier and convenient. The reading states “for students to effectively negotiate the new literacies, teachers must effectively integrate technology into the classrooms…”

Consult our class glossary under course profile-docs. Find one example of new literacies that surprised you and/ or that you disagree with.

One example of new literacies that surprised me and I respectfully disagree with would be “Podcast.” Literacy typically refers to the ability to read, write, and comprehend written or textual information. While podcasts tend to only enhance literacy skills.

How can we apply Szwed’s and Perry’s definitions of literacy as we study new literacies?

Szwed’s and Perry’s have different definitions of literacy that can be applied to the study of new literacies. Szwed's definition emphasizes literacy as a set of skills and practices tied to specific cultural contexts. He argues that literacy is not a single, universally defined concept but varies across cultures and contexts. Perry's definition broadens the concept of literacy to include multiple literacies beyond traditional reading and writing. She argues that literacy is not limited to print but extends to various modes of communication, including visual, digital, and multimedia literacies. Szwed’s it is essential to consider the cultural and social factors that influence how people engage with digital technologies and media. Perry’s perspective aligns closely with the idea of new literacies. It highlights the importance of acknowledging and teaching a range of literacies that are relevant in today's digital and multimedia-rich environment.

What are some “new literacies” that have helped you with your schooling? Explain.

Digital literacy has given me the skills to navigate the digital tools and platforms used for virtual classes and assignments. Whether it is logging into a learning management system, conducting research online, or collaborating with classmates on a shared document, digital literacy has made everything much smoother.

Have you ever had to help someone with technology (new literacies) who was not tech savvy? What was that experience like?

My grandma is not tech-savvy at all, and she often turns to me for assistance when she encounters issues with her computer or smartphone. One of the first things I noticed is that patience is essential. What seems straightforward to me might be entirely new and confusing to her.

What is ONE “new literacies” that you cannot live without?

I definitely cannot live without any new digital technology. I always need my phone and computer. I feel like my world revolves around it. It helps me keep my life organized and communicate easier as well as do schoolwork easier.
