Summary

Szwed believes this is composed of 5 elements: text, context, function, participants, motivation. I'm choosing motivation to go into detail about, According to Szwed motivation, reading and writing skills may vary according to motivation, with varying degrees of skill following differing degrees of motivation. Szwed states “ A reader's motivation may also vary according to context, function, and text. Method of studying literacy Szwed recommends is using ethnography. In order to comprehend the customs and behaviors of a certain community or group, ethnography entails close observation and immersion. According to Szwed, this approach is recommended because it pushes literacy to touch on the social settings, purposes, and meanings of reading and writing within a particular minority, moving beyond generalizations about literacy. It seems clear from the statement that "we must come to terms with people's lives without patronizing them" that we would treat the study of people and their cultures with dignity and without prejudice. If i was a bronx instructor at a highschool in the bronx , i’d take Szweds advice by trying to incorporate the study and systematic recording of human cultures. I’ll try to recognize and respect the cultural setting in which literacy instruction is taking place. Acknowledge the learners' varied backgrounds, morals, and tongues of the community I'm in. Perry distinguishes between two kinds of models: the ideological model and the autonomous model. The ideological model of literacy sees literacy as a set of practices other than just skills, whereas the autonomous model sees literacy as a collection of merely technical abilities. I believe both of them seem to be crucial to literacy. When I researched the term “ Orality versus literacy “ I learned that literacy is defined as the capacity to read and write, whereas "orality" refers to the main spoken language used in societies where writing is either unknown or very rare. According to Szwed, literacy practices should be shaped around the diversity and inclusion of the community of which literacy is being taught. Our environment shapes the way we view literacy and Szweds expresses the importance of including ethnography into literacy practices. Educators, and other stakeholders create the literacy standard when it comes to the curriculum they choose to include. They might work together to specify the abilities and information required at various grade levels. They can also include diversity and the elements Szwedz speaks of.
