Part 1/ Introduction
State: your essay topic in your own words.
My essay topic is “Communication and its variance among different communities.”
Zoom in: what is the focus/ point of your essay?
The focus of my essay is to study how different communication and language can be from one community to another in New York City. Also, how the community’s way of communication is not only verbal, but is also visual.
Introduce your topic: why did you select it?
I selected this topic because it has always caught my attention how people communicate with each other. Coming from another country has helped see different behaviors among different communities and cultures as well. The way that language is used in New York City is very diverse and I believe it deserves some time to study.
Describe your research methods.
My main research method for this essay has been going around different parts of New York City, including Queens and Manhattan in order to see by myself the different ways of language utilization and comparing them. Another research method has been to look for some older pictures and videos of different neighborhoods and compare how it has changed over the years. This has helped to see how language has been improving and how communities have adopted a sense of identity through language over the years.
Part 2
Present your evidence.
1. Photos
2. Articles
Explain your evidence.
1. I took the photos and I believe they are important for my essay and research because they represent the way that communities have changed over the years and it is crucial to compare the literacy levels and communication used.
2. I found some articles that talk about and rank different neighborhoods in New York City which have more diversity especially when it comes to people and languages.
Please do this using numbers or bullet points. List your research/ evidence and interpret it for us–what is it and what do you make of it? You may be done with your research or you may be still in the process of working on it. Here, give us what you have.
Part 3:
Explain: which discourse describes your project, hegemonic or counternarrative?
I believe my discourse for this project will fit more on the hegemonic because one its main focus is how different language seems to be and use among different communities where those who would be categorized as privileged.
In a nutshell, a hegemonic discourse is the story that the ruling class tells. It justifies their power and confirms that they deserve it.
In a nutshell, a counternarrative discourse is a form of resistance to those in power; it contradicts the main/ generally accepted discourse.
Part 4:
Reference at least one course material. Make a connection between the course material and your research topic.
One course material I can make a connection with my material and research is “New Literacies” because I have noticed how this applies to communities as they have also developed the use of different types of technologies and have improved the way they connect to it.
Part 5:
So? Why should we care?
We should care because understanding the changes that communities have made over the years is helpful for us to know where we are standing today. Changes help us see and analyze.
