Essay Outline
Here is the format I’d like you to follow. Please do not submit an essay draft, but rather focus on answering the questions below. This outline should serve as a base for your essay. Be sure to clearly mark your essay outline parts (part 1, 2, etc.) so that your classmates can easily answer our peer review questions.
Part 1/ Introduction
State: your essay topic in your own words.
1. This essay will inform the reader on how food retailers use food literacy to attract a community based on what most of the neighborhood have knowledge of, like longevity in health, or a more dynamic restaurant and whatever maybe in trend.
Zoom in: what is the focus/ point of your essay?
1. The focus I am very determine on is how stores advertise themselves accordingly for their benefit in wealth in a certain area in providing unhealthy meals. For example, what may be available in a place like Williamsburg will most definitely not be available in a Hispanic neighborhood like corona.
Introduce your topic: why did you select it?
1. I had selected my topic because I found it very interesting that I couldn’t enjoy a healthy or perhaps a better choice meal because I wasn’t around the right area. You can be mad at the poor choices people had followed for decades but it’s much deeper than that. I think the number one problem we have here in America is food literacy. We can make a difference if we all have knowledge of such at an early age. Knowing health is perfection.
Describe your research methods.
1. My research method for the essay will be visiting different boroughs of New York City to provide information to not mislead my readers. I will be providing photos taken with my cell phone, as well as providing locations. I will be asking friends and family members on the important topic of food literacy and if it was taught to them in school. I will also be providing articles to help.
Part 2
Present your evidence.
1. Photographs
2. Articles
3. Studies done by doctors.
Explain your evidence.
1. My photographic evidence will include marketing strategies that’ll provide present time support regards to my remarks.
2. Articles about this topic will provide enough information to help for my readers to understand how important food literacy is for us.
3. The studies will be on young ones being taught food literacy compared to those not taught and how it makes a difference.
Please do this using numbers or bullet points. List your research/ evidence and interpret it for us–what is it and what do you make of it? You may be done with your research, or you may be still in the process of working on it. Here, give us what you have.
Part 3:
Explain: which discourse describes your project, hegemonic or counternarrative?
I think my project is discussing a little bit of hegemonic and counternarrative because it has to do with having privileges, and a certain raise being targeted.
In a nutshell, a hegemonic discourse is the story that the ruling class tells. It justifies their power and confirms that they deserve it.
In a nutshell, a counternarrative discourse is a form of resistance to those in power; it contradicts the main/ generally accepted discourse.
Part 4:
Reference at least one course material. Make a connection between the course material and your research topic.
My one reference for this course material is “The Illiteracy-To-Prison Pipeline,” a TEDx Talk by Brandon Griggs. It relates to my topic because he mentioned how not having resources were difficult to him. Resources is very important like knowing what to eat or having good influencers around him to have a change, but influencers don’t just get ideas or information out of the blue, it comes from somewhere.
Part 5:
So? Why should we care?
We should care because this is the state we live in, yes, we have the freedom to choose what we want to eat but how can it be freedom if we don’t know a better option. This is a serious problem because it spread or maybe started by big corporations that value money more than a human being, this is already affecting people lives today. Some people may want to provide a clean healthy meal for their family but can’t because maybe travel problems or money problems, I know those family owned “organic” supermarkets are ripping people off just because they know those folks can’t go so far.

Hey Murphy,
Your topic is really interesting. I would never think “Food Literacy” is an actual thing and topic of research. Your concern for the marginalized communities is just and fair, I hope this topic could be more approachable by others because health and alimentation is fundamental for the well develop of the communities we form part of. And we all should have equal access to a complete and healthy nutrition. Keep up to the good work. Great research topic!
