Part 1/ Introduction
Talk about how a specific group of minorities are at a disadvantage when it comes to literacy in the United States. Talk about literacy practices in this community that aren’t taken into account by the school system. Also talk about this groups use of hegemonic tools of literacy practice to gain power
The point of my essay is to shine light on how minorities (specifically african americans) are neglected by the public school system.
I selected this topic because it’s what I feel like related to me the most.
My research will come from different sources like websites, class articles, and youtube videos.
Part 2
- Forbes article How ‘Reading Instruction’ Fails Black And Brown Children” by Natalie Wexler talks about the disadvantages minorities subjected to.
- “Literacy By Any Means Necessary: The History of Anti-Literacy Laws in the U.S” by Carliss Maddox talks about how past literacy laws still affetct minorities today
Part 3
I feel like counternarrative is more likely to describe my project.
Part 4
“With COVID-19, The African-American Literacy Crisis Will Get Much Worse” talked about how Children that have low literacy are less likely to get higher paying jobs as adults, or find employment in general.
Part 5
I feel like everyone should care because if we want to progress as a society we need people from all walks of life with different perspectives to positively contribute. This all starts with gaining a sufficient level of literacy.
