Part 1:
State: Observe how the Hispanic/Latino community have been affected by the way literacy is taught in the United States.
Zoom in: How the Hispanic/Latino community was overlooked when it came to schooling and how they could have been put at a disadvantage when it came to the literacy standard in America.
Introduce your topic: The reason why I chose to look at the Hispanic/Latino population is because they make for 19.1% of Americas population. Since it’s Americas largest ethnic minority group I thought that it would be interesting to explore within.
Describe: What I planned to do was research different articles through google related to the literacy and education of Hispanic/Latino individuals.
Part 2:
Present your evidence: Searching how the general population of the Latino community may be doing in education through statistics.
Explain your evidence: Through the statistics provided through educational sources, I will then further analyze how they may be improving or what areas the community may be struggling in.
Part 3:
Explain: I believe that my project leans more towards hegemony
Part 4:
Reference: One course material that I will reference is from week 9 the article “The Potential and Promise of Latino Students” in which it covers challenges that a Latino student may face in their academic careers.
Part 5:
Why should we care: The reason that I believe we should care is if it’s known that one of the biggest minority population may be struggling with their academics in America. With this knowledge, why wouldn’t we want to tackle this issue knowing that it could be putting many children behind and is something that affects them later in their career?

Hey Arta,
I believe that hispanic/latino communities are overlooked as you say when it comes to literacy practices and their way to learn. I come from a latino family and I seen first hand how we are in a much lower position than other communities when it comes to education. Being the largest minority group in the United States should be a factor to take into account in order to promote and find solutions for these types of problems. I believe you are on a good path in your research. Keep up to the good work.

7. No, the author does not reference hegemonic or counternarrative discourse.
8. The strengths are in the topic; it’s a stable framework and one that I’m sure has ample research done around it.
9. My only suggestion would be to have more concrete sources planned out and maybe include some that aren’t just researched online. Hearing the perspective of a Latino person who has personally been affected by the methods of teaching literacy could really strengthen the essay.
