The Black community has not been afforded equal access to literacy in contemporary America due to historical discrimination, disparities in education, limited access to quality resources, and underrepresentation in literature and educational materials. These factors, among others, continue to hinder equal opportunities for literacy and success.
Literacy is used as a tool of power by those in control, like governments and dominant groups, to influence what people know and believe, often disadvantaging marginalized or less privileged communities.
To help establish more equality for the Black/African-American community in the US, We can educate ourselves on their experiences, listen to their voices, advocate for fair policies, support Black-owned businesses, volunteer for community initiatives, promote diversity, vote responsibly, engage in conversations about race, challenge stereotypes, and be an ally by actively standing against racism.
