The Black community has not been allowed equal access to literacy opportunities. In the “The Library Card”, Richard was unable to afford the books he wanted and he wasn’t allowed in the library because of his skin so he had to find whatever he could like old newspapers and books without covers.

According to “Why Slave-Era Barriers to Black Literacy Still Matter” Literacy was used as a hegemonic tool of power by whites to swindle illiterate blacks of their lands and assets. It is still used as a tool of power today because according to “With COVID-19, The African-American Literacy Crisis Will Get Much Worse” Children that have low literacy are less likely to get higher paying jobs as adults, or find employment in general.

Equality can be established literacy wise if schools make the reading material relevant to minorities lives and the history of their culture.

I agree with the argument in “With COVID-19, The African-American Literacy Crisis Will Get Much Worse” because there’s more of a chance that minorities are not be provided with the satisfactory resources to learn and participate in remote learning. The author said, “African American students are more likely to be missing out on instruction during this pandemic, since they’re more likely to lack the connectivity needed for remote schooling than their White peers”
