1. Describe one identity that you have that you are most proud of and explain why. Describe also one identity that you either are not proud of, or struggle with. Explain why you are not proud of this identity or why you struggle with it.

I am proud to be Taishanese, which is part of Cantonese Chinese. This ethnicity has produced the most number of Chinese influential members such as singers, actors, and famous historical figures. I dislike being Asian American because of the racism that is coming out from the pandemic. Also, it is difficult for me to apply for jobs and work comfortably.

2. After reading the article “The Potential and Promise of Latino Students” discuss one new thing you learned about the Latino population. Be specific and explain your thoughts and reactions regarding what you read and learned.

I learned that Latinos have it more difficult in schools. In 2015, only 21% were proficient in 4th and 8th grade literacy and 16% completed a bachelor’s degree. Also, they face isolation and neglect in English primary schools. Throughout my early school years, I’ve never seen Latinos having a hard time. It always looked like everyone was the same when it came to being educated. Those that spent more time on homework and study performed the best in class. I’m kind of surprised by the statistic numbers and how blind I was by it all.

3. Choose one of the videos assigned this week. What is the main argument of the video? What reasons are used to support the argument? What are your personal thoughts and reactions to what was presented in the video?

Racial disparity and common stereotypes from Latino identity. This race makes up the largest number of minorities in America and contributes heavily to the economy.  Racism affects people of every ethnicity. It hurts tremendously, even and especially for children. It’s right to take a stand and try to stop hate from occurring and spreading.
