Latter to Ms. Adichi

Dear Ms. Adichi Good Day

My name is Sullivan, I was born and raised in Nigeria and moved to New York five years ago and have lived in New York ever since. I am currently a college student at Borough Manhattan Community College in New York. I am taking an American social literature class this semester. That is how I learned about you and your knowledge of literacy from watching your video “The danger of a single story” speech from our class materials.

After watching your speech. I understand that single stories can have a significant negative impact. They can rob people of their dignity, and emphasize how we are different rather than how we are similar. At its core, this talk encourages us to recognize how much stories matter.

The importance of diversity and how a single story can be dangerous. This is echoed in the course materials, which emphasize the importance of considering multiple perspectives and avoiding stereotypes. The power of stories to shape our understanding of the world. This is also a key theme in the course materials, which explore how stories can be used to educate, entertain, and inspire. This emphasizes the importance of using our own voices to tell our own stories. This is something that the course materials encourage students to do, as they are given the opportunity to share their own thoughts and experiences in class discussions and assignments.

The connection between single stories and the impact of power in my life. In any kind of situation to me it is all about who tells the story, how and when, can impact situations greatly. The way we make sense of situations leads to narratives that may be harmful if left unexamined.

Based on your idea I recognize the power of stories to influence identity, shape stereotypes, and build paths to empathy the broaden that scope of stories they consume about other people and cultures that examine their own biases and engage with new perspectives in an open-minded way to be aware of their biases and the assumptions they may unconsciously be making about others.
