1) Select 1-2 paragraphs from “African-Born Immigrants in U.S. Schools.” Summarize them and respond to them.
One section of this article addresses the goal of multicultural education, which aims to enhance academic performance and proposes reforming educational institutions to ensure equal academic opportunities for group from various racial and cultural backgrounds. It emphasizes the importance of acknowledging the cultural knowledge, experiences, and needs of immigrant groups originating from culturally diverse societies. The article also highlights the need to adapt continually to multicultural demographics and adjust the educational curriculum system to accommodate the arrival of new minority groups. Although the author points out the problems and provides solutions, implementation of the above solutions is still challenging due to the continuous influx of immigrants with different unique cultural identities and diverse ideologies.

I fully agree with the author’s proposal to ensure that people from different cultural backgrounds have equal academic opportunities and ensure that they all receive a complete academic education, as we learned in previous weeks: most criminals lack literacy skills. Attention and providing resources to people from all cultural backgrounds, although difficult, can significantly reduce the number of criminals. This will help immigrants become useful talents for society rather than criminals.

2) Discuss something you learned and/ or can relate to from one of this week’s assigned videos.
In the video “Africa in America: Migration,” I learned that many families are willing to invest in and prioritize education, making sacrifices to ensure that their children and future generations can access quality education and lead improved lives. Given the historical context of race relations and racism in the United States, African American families will place more emphasis on education so that their next generation can have a better life in this social situation. In comparison to aspiring to become basketball stars, rappers, or movie stars, pursuing education, and becoming intellectuals, business professionals, and lawyers can enable individuals to exert more substantial influence in this society. So education may be one of the best investments.

I chose this video not only because the reporter interviewed African immigrants on the spot about their daily lives in the United States but also because I noticed numerous comments from African immigrants in the comment section below, sharing information about their places of origin, their experiences living in the United States, and describing the challenges they face. These personal descriptions of their experiences allowed us to gain insights from an “African perspective.”
