1) Select 1-2 paragraphs from “African-Born Immigrants in U.S. Schools.” Summarize them and respond to them.
Summary:
The paper discusses the underrepresentation and lack of recognition of African-born immigrants and their descendants in the U.S. education system. It highlights that despite the increasing number of African immigrants in the country, their presence is not adequately reflected in curricular decisions and educational planning. The absorption of African immigrant populations into the broader category of the black race has led to limited understanding of their histories, cultures, and achievements. The paper aims to address the lack of recognition and opportunities for African immigrant students and argues for changes in the educational curriculum.
Response:
The report highlights a critical problem concerning the integration and acknowledgment of African-born immigrants and their descendants in the United States school system. There is clearly a mismatch between the expanding African immigrant population and their representation in educational resources and curriculum. This underrepresentation can contribute to a lack of awareness of African cultures and history among American-born educators and peers.
The case for dealing with this situation is compelling. All kids, regardless of background, should be able to learn about and respect the various cultures that make up American society. This acknowledgement not only promotes a more inclusive and equal educational system, but it also builds a sense of belonging among African immigrant kids.
To overcome this issue, educators, legislators, and curriculum developers must work together to include more varied viewpoints into the curriculum. This might entail rewriting textbooks and instructional materials to incorporate more accurate and nuanced depictions of African cultures and history. Efforts should also be made to teach instructors so that they may better grasp the special needs and experiences of African immigrant kids.
Finally, the study emphasizes a serious issue of underrepresentation and lack of acknowledgement of African-born immigrants and their descendants in the United States school system. It underlines the significance of tackling this issue in order to provide a more inclusive and equal educational environment for all pupils.
2) Discuss something you learned and/ or can relate to from one of this week’s assigned videos.
Something I learned is that some African American students have a hard time being themselves when it comes to a school environment because at home they are taught by their parents to be humble, respectful to professors which is completely different from the school environment because of the fact that professors always want you to interact with them, communicate grow a sort of connection and because of that it’s hard for African American students to adjust to the environment because they don’t know who to listen when it comes to being in a school.

This source basically talks about the laws and regulations enacted to combat discrimination and equal rights in society have provided African Americans with a fair playing field in education. However, additional effort is required to assist support America’s school system’s multicultural education demands, not only for African Americans, but for other cultures and ethnic groups that have grown in number. Many of the measures enacted have provided possibilities for African American pupils to obtain a better education and have made school more accessible. One common misperception regarding affirmative action measures is that they solely benefit African Americans and other minorities. These regulations truly serve to ensure that diversity and ethnic viewpoints are integrated into our country’s social framework. The effects of such policies may not be seen for some time, but in the long run, they will assist to integrate a multicultural perspective into future populations and encourage future growth. The attempts to integrate multicultural concepts in America’s education system continue, but there are also numerous obstacles with the integration of many other ethnic groups in America’s curricula and pedagogical focus.
The reason I selected it is because it not online talks about how its difficult when it comes from a home environment to then a school environment is because even if during this time slavery isn’t as recent there’s still history behind it and because of the history behind slavery there will always be some sort of racist remarks made by a certain someone in the classes.
This matters a lot because of the fact that schools aren’t really bringing this up to attention as well as teachers especially when talking about racial matters it should always be brought up in topic to not make any racist remarks towards anyone when talking about this sort of topic because of that fact that people don’t have self control over what they say so when they aren’t told to not do something, words will always slip out which is messed up.
