Welcome to Week 5: African & Indian and Alaskan Native Perspectives

Hi Everyone,

I hope you are becoming more aware of your own stories related to literacy as you explore those of others.

This week we begin our work as literacy anthropologists: for the next few weeks, we will explore the literacies of different ethnic and cultural groups, learn from them and try to contribute what we know about each topic we discuss. We begin with two perspectives: the African perspective and the Indian and Alaskan Native perspectives. Please read the instructions in week 5 to know which group you have been assigned to and what your task will be. The idea here is that half the class with research the African perspective and the other half will research the Indian and Alaskan Native perspective. And then we share what we’ve learned on our Discussion Board. Good luck and let me know if you have any questions.

Also, please review the oral history project assignment and continue working on it. You can use the Write section to post your interview questions and brainstorm ideas; you can also review a few sample oral history projects to get a sense of what this assignment is all about.

Wishing you a great week,

Prof. Barnes
