Summary

From the video I learned that a way to develop digital literacies is to focus on your interest to gain motivation to want to learn it. I also learned that the eight essential elements of digital literacy are cognitive, constructive, communicative, civic, critical, creative, confident, and cultural. I learned that remixing is how digital literacy and practices generally develop overtime. From the reading, I learned that studies show that online reading promotes hurried and distracted reading that’s turning us into shallow thinkers. There are four traits that describe new literacy; 1) the internet and communication technologies require new skills, strategies, and literacies, 2) new literacies are essential for participation in world community, 3) literacy changes as technology changes, and 4) new literacies are multifaceted. Technology can benefit learning if the teacher can find a good fit between technology and curriculum.

One example of new literacy that surprised me was apple pay, since I haven’t thought about apple pay in that way.
Just like how Szwed believed that reading and writing skills varied depending on a person's motivation and boredom, that’s the same way to develop digital literacies. Perry’s belief of there being multiple literacies based on culture also enforce this.

A new literacy that has helped me with schooling is being able to tell the difference between a reliable and unreliable source. It’s commonly known by new age college students that wikipedia is untrustworthy, and that websites with the domain “.com” are usually most reliable, followed by “.org”, followed by “.net”

I used to have to help my grandmother setup the tv all the time because she had no clue how to use it. Things that are simple to people who are my age, like plugging the HDMI cord into the right socket in the cable box.

One “new literacy” I can’t live without is the ability to understand and reply to text messages. Not just for recreational reasons but for safety reasons as well. If someone else is in danger and they can’t talk on the phone then I would be able to help, and vice versa.

The three emojis that I think describe my personality are the laughing emoji, the sleeping emoji, and the nerd emoji.
