Literacy is the ability to read, write, and understand written information. It’s an essential skill that empowers individuals to communicate, comprehend, and navigate the world around them. During my research, I found that literacy is not just limited to basic reading and writing skills, but also includes critical thinking. Literacy is not just about decoding words, but also about interpreting and analyzing information to make informed decisions. John Trischitti talks about how it can break harsh social cycles that we can get ourselves into. He speaks on how important it is for children to have access to books and education so it can benefit them in the future. John states that people who are literate have a better chance at opportunities and life. He talks about how people who struggle with poverty are less likely to be literate. I personally agree with the importance of literacy as it is a foundational skill that enables lifelong learning. When it comes to poverty and literacy, it’s important to understand that poverty can have a significant impact on access to education and resources needed for literacy development. Limited access to quality schools, books, and educational materials can make it harder for individuals in poverty to acquire basic literacy skills.
