I think literacy is a multifaceted and evolving concept that goes beyond the ability to read and write. It encompasses a range of skills and competencies necessary for individuals to effectively engage with and navigate the world around them. My definition of literacy aligns with the broader contemporary understanding of literacy. It is the ability to effectively comprehend, interpret, evaluate, and communicate information and ideas across various mediums, including written, oral, digital, and visual forms. John Trischitti, in his work, defines literacy as “the ability to identify, understand, interpret, create, communicate, and compute, using printed and written materials associated with varying contexts.” He emphasizes the importance of literacy in enabling individuals to participate fully in society, make informed decisions, and access opportunities for personal and professional growth. I agree with Trischitti’s definition and its importance. In today’s information-driven world, literacy is a fundamental skill that empowers individuals to critically assess information, engage in meaningful discourse, and adapt to an ever-changing landscape. Literacy is not just about reading and writing; it’s about being a well-rounded, informed, and active citizen in a complex, interconnected world. It is essential for personal development, social inclusion, and economic success, making it a cornerstone of modern education and society.
