In “The Ethnography of Literacy,” According to Szwed the five elements of literacy are text, context, function, participants, and motivation.Context includes bedside reading,coffee-break,lunch time reading, vacation readying, reading to children and others. One method of studying literacy that Szwed recommend is that using ethnography, a different way of studying literacy, can provide more valuable insights compared to traditional methods like questionnaires and surveys.Szwed believed ethnography could uncover overlooked factors in improving literacy and setting standards. If i’m a literacy instructor at a high school in the Bronx i think I would immerse myself in the local community, getting to know the students’ backgrounds, cultures, and the unique literacy challenges they face. All their difficulties when learning literacy skills. According to Perry two models of literacy are autonomous model and ideological model. The difference between autonomous model and ideological model are the perspective on literacy.I don’t think either one is better than other because both model aims differently.Literacy is the ability to read and write.Orality is the quality of being spoken or verbally communicated. Our literacy practices are shaped due to living in a community that have people comes from different countries and the languages they brought to the community.

Hello Jie, I believe you correctly highlighted Szwed’s five elements of literacy and the importance of context in literacy practices. Ethnography indeed offers a valuable perspective for understanding literacy, especially in diverse communities like the Bronx. Imagining yourself in the local community and understanding students’ backgrounds and challenges would be the best approach for a literacy instructor. I like that you kept the answers simple snd straight to the point while allowing the enormous post to flow smoothly. Thank you for sharing.
