Literacy is the ability to read and write in which allows us to communicate with one another. However, when it comes to my personal definition of literacy I believe that literacy can be also defined through speaking and listening. I believe there are many ways for one to be literate and for one to contribute to literacy. If someone didn’t have the ability to read or write, I wouldn’t exactly define them as someone who is illiterate as long as they’re able to communicate through verbal language. Through my research it seems that depending on who you ask, the definition of literacy varies. What I understood through watching John Trischitti is that his definition of literacy is the ability to read and write. He also brought up that if being illiterate was considered a health concern, that it would be deemed as an epidemic. John Trischitti also mentions that the data further explains how people who live in poverty usually are in a high percentile of illiteracy. I believe the issues that John Trischitti brings up is important and that he states how literacy can be used as a tool in which if you’re good at literacy it’s a way to better your life. I don’t exactly agree with the idea literacy only being defined through reading and writing as it would undermine that there are people who speak better then they write.
