What role does literacy play in your life? Provide at least one specific example.
Literacy is an important part of my school life. In any writing intensive course, it is imperative to master writing skills in order to create a captivating story that inspires readers or expresses your own story. For example, my last semester I had a psychology course that required me to write 10 page essays. To get a good grade, I had to brush up on my skills and ensure I kept the readers’ attention.
Is there a text, a book, song lyrics, a story or a blog entry, that inspired you to do something or to think differently about something? If so, explain.
Answer: I think song lyrics that inspired me to think differently about life is when it came to lil tjays lyrics and his uprising when it came to his life. His lyrics talking about his past and how even when it hit him hard he still persevered and got to where he is currently and i think that should be a big inspiration for everyone. Even still when he got shot 7 times he still lived which just shows that if you have the drive for something go for it and it’ll eventually pay off even when others put you down trying to end your life you have to fight through that
Literacy is the ability to read and write well enough to work and socialize in society. Literacy plays a big role in my life because it helps me receive the information that I need. I have to write clear enough for my job to understand my handwriting because I use a log book and write in it every 30 minutes for any special activities. Clear communication is a must.
3) Describe your relationship with literacy from when you first learned to read and write to now?.
My relationship with literacy has changed dramatically since I first learned to read and write. When I was a child, I saw literacy as a chore. I was forced to read books and write essays for school, and I didn’t see the value in it. However, as I got older, I began to appreciate the power of literacy. I realized that it was a tool that could be used to learn about the world, to communicate with others, and to express myself creatively.
Literacy is the skills or ability to read, write, and communicate. The challenge that i faced with literacy is when i first come to this country and i can’t read and communicate with the teachers or other classmates.
To me, literacy means being able to read and write effectively. It’s about having the skills to understand and communicate through written language.
The entrance to a world of information and communication may be unlocked by literacy. Not only should you be able to write your name and know the alphabet, but you should also be able to read, comprehend stories in books, express yourself in letters, decipher signs and symbols around you, and understand the meaning of diverse written forms.
What is your definition of literacy?
To me, literacy has always been defined by your ability to read and write. I believe there are various levels of literacy, for example, we are more literate than a child in first grade, but less literate than say, someone with a doctorate in English literature.
Have you faced any challenges with literacy? For example, was there a class or a specific text that you found difficult to understand? What did you do?
I am an immigrant who came to the United States when I was in 7th grade. When I initially attended classes in the United States, I had a difficult time comprehending the content. I can only rely on other people’s gestures and simple words in sentences to guess their intended meaning. This continued for over a week, after which I began conversing with them using sentences I had picked up from listening to their conversations. Over time, I learned more sentences and words through these interactions, I successfully mastered the ability to have conversations with people.
1. Literacy is the practice of reading, writing, or speaking.
2. Literacy is a daily practice in my life. I won’t say it has been this way my entire life, but for almost six years now, I have made my main priority in life to study and practice the right religion. In order to do that, I had to open a lot of books, talk to a lot of teachers, visit different areas of worship. Throughout all of this I had to pick up a practice of (specifically) reading. As I continued to engage in my Islamic Studies, I stumbled upon a teaching from Allah (s.w.t.)/God and the Prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h.) where everything taught to you or preached to you, should be authenticated and proofed on your own terms to make sure no opportunities of manipulation or deception is opened. Since then the amount of misunderstood practices or misguided religions I was able to read and learn about was truly unimaginable.
3. Growing up I lived a typical american child life. I went to school, engaged in daily practices of reading and writing throughout my school years. Since then I went on to graduate high school, and even though I haven’t took the initiative to get a college education, I continued to use my literacy skills to help aid me in my General Laborers careers. Including construction courses, licensing, and any other work opportunity that required me to engage in some sort of certification process.
4. When I started to get deeper and deeper into the General Laborers field, the courses usually got harder and harder. not only would they be more informative but very extensive and intense, ranging from reading and writing to mathematics. For example, as I continued to work construction, I found a work opportunity with an electric company, but to work with them I had to attend and pass in intensive college level courses in order to become a certified electrician. From the start, I knew that with my work schedule and low academic level I was not going to be able to maintain and commit to such a career, so I decided to post-pone it until I can find a better time and opportunity to fully commit.
5. The Holy Quran, truly changed my life for the better. Not only did it make me a better version of myself, but encouraged me to make anyone around me if not just as great, even better. The detailed teachings and practices of the religion Islam are completely thought out and clearly explained. So for me to engage into it didn’t take much, but it is the commitment I got from Islam that really made me change my point of view in regards to how to live my best life. Completely taking out things, that are considered normal in the U.S.A.
6. I don’t think I can honestly tell my life story without mentioning literacy, seeing I am the person I am today because I read.
Describe your relationship with literacy from when you first learned to read and write to now.
My relationship with literacy is that I always had a struggle with writing, my writing was like if I would send a text it was . My reading level was low maybe because I didn’t like reading, I hate reading. I have to use audios for reading so I don’t get bored fast .
1. What is your definition of literacy?
My definition of literacy is simple. Literacy is communication but not any type of communication. Wherever there is a clear understanding of the material that is being read or written and/or a good understanding on how to also express ideas clearly. That is the definition of literacy that I have been able to create over the past few weeks along with the material that we have been learning in class.
2. What role does literacy play in your life? Provide at least one specific example.
Literacy plays a really important role in my life. I’m grateful for the things that I know and the things that I’m still learning and everything because I had the opportunity since I was really small to be introduced to reading, writing and listening. The fact that I can describe myself as a literate person who is able to communicate and understand others properly is the reason why I’m able to take this course today. This is my example.
3. Describe your relationship with literacy from when you first learned to read and write to now.
I feel like my relationship with literacy since I began my education, my reading and writing skills are always improving and getting better. I’m a much better reader and writer today than I was a year ago. The fact that we are always learning new things is amazing and it is the same with literacy. Every day is just getting better and better.
4. Have you faced any challenges with literacy? For example, was there a class or a specific text that you found difficult to understand? What did you do?
I have faced challenges with text before. But more than literacy itself being the problem I would say that it is the way they are written and the words that are at a higher academic level than myself therefore it makes it difficult for me to catch up and understand the material right away. Rereading and searching for the words that I have no knowledge of has helped me improve my experience when facing these kinds of problems. Just like I mentioned before. We are always learning.
5. Is there a text, a book, song lyrics, a story or a blog entry, that inspired you to do something or to think differently about something? If so, explain.
There is a book I read a few years ago called “Life without limits” that is about Nick Vujicic and how he managed to live his days as a man that was born with no legs or arms. The book is a real life story and is written by himself. The way that this inspired me is to be more grateful for the things that I have and to put less excuses to myself when it comes to doing things.
6. Could you tell your life story without mentioning literacy? If so, try it here.
I could try but then it would not be my life story. At least not fully. I was born, grow up with my brothers and sister, my mom and dad. Play games. Have fun and grow old.
Literacy is the ability to read, write, and comprehend information, allowing individuals to communicate, access knowledge, and understand the world around them. In a broader context, literacy extends beyond traditional reading and writing to include understanding various forms of media, technology, and other domains of information. We read to live full independent lives.
To apply for jobs that pay a living wage, to advance and build on prior learning in school, to advocate for our families and
Understand medical instructions. We also vote and write to our elected officials and interpret bills and use bank accounts.
1) What is your definition of literacy?
My definition of literacy is that it is an opportunity and a gate that brings fortune to our future. It does not begin when we enter school but way before when we start to comprehend something. When we start school these skills are a chance to improve our skills.
2) What role does literacy play in your life? Provide at least one specific example.
The role that literacy plays in my life is having a great outcome after a job interview and being able to understand a manual on “How to build” furniture. Life would be very difficult if I did not have literacy skills.
3) Describe your relationship with literacy from when you first learned to read and write to now.
The first time I encountered literacy that I will never forget was in kindergarden. I found it to be amazing being able to write the name people have been calling me, it was like my brain has exploded into another reality.
4) Have you faced any challenges with literacy? For example, was there a class or a specific text that you found difficult to understand? What did you do?
The challenge that I can think of was in government class. We were practicing court cases and role playing. I have had some trouble understanding some of the vocabulary words. For me to solve this issue I went ahead and started searching for the meaning of those words and I started trying to use them on my day to day.
5) Is there a text, a book, song lyrics, a story or a blog entry, that inspired you to do something or to think differently about something? If so, explain.
I can mention one book that has helped me not only understand but to better myself as a person. It contributed to my life in understanding how delicate our body is and how we should take care of ourselves. It also showed me how delicate life really is. This book’s name is “Theology of the body’ written by Pope Saint John Paul II.
6) Could you tell your life story without mentioning literacy? If so, try it here.
I would not be able to tell my life story without literacy because I would not have the skills to do so. Literacy is what makes storytelling real and possible.
1. The practice of reading, writing, or communicating.
2. Being able to be the best religious person I can be.
3. When I first started it was just based on everyday norms. Such as going to school, talking with my parents, surfing the internet. But not it is more self-motivated with the aim or interest of engaging into religion to the best of my capabilities. Islam being the religion I am following it requires attention to details and everyday practice.
4. I haven’t been in school for a while, so the whole idea of opening a textbook and committing to doing homework was a little bit of a struggle. I am also a little older than my classmates so kind of also finding my comfort zone to be able to speak up, join study groups, etc. was also a little bit of a struggle.
5. (2 books actually) The Quran and the Hadeeths of the Prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h.). These books are not only a guide to what is right/wrong, considered a good/bad deed, and what a cliche religious understanding would be. These books help show how to live your life to the fullest, while also making sure that you are able to not only look over your own shoulder but anyone around. I have never read anything more relatable and reliable than these two books.
6. If someone were to say that their life can be told without mentioning literacy, then they are most likely cavemen. If not, maybe whatever before them was. Literacy goes all the way back to the first cavemen drawing or writing attempts. Literacy is memory, knowledge, and potential all in one. So me personally I can not say that I can tell my life story without mentioning literacy.
