- A Repressive State Apparatus includes institutions like the police, courts, and military that enforces rules and punish people who break them. Althusser calls it “repressive” because it uses force, fear, or punishment to make people obey laws and follow society rules.
- Ideological State Apparatus include schools, churches, media, and families. They shape people’s ideas, values, and behaviors without using force. For example , a school might teach that working hard leads to success, encouraging students to accept society’s rules and ways of living.
- The difference is how they control people. RSAs use force, punishment, or threats people to obey, while ISAs influence beliefs and ideas so people follow rules willingly.

- The Repressive State Apparatus (RSA) refers to a system that maintains control over individuals by using the threat of violence, which includes institutions like the police, courts, and prisons. Althusser describes it as “repressive” because it employs threats to ensure compliance with the rules. For instance, the police might need to use force to disperse a chaotic crowd.
- The Ideological State Apparatus mainly handles the job, meaning that the police and courts only have to intervene when it fails to keep people in line. Its function appears to be to stop any changes to the existing order, and it encompasses schools, politics, and the mass media.
- The difference between Repressive State Apparatuses (RSA)and Ideological State Apparatuses (ISAs) is how they maintain people. RSA, such as the police, courts, and military, operate primarily through force or the threat of force to control behavior and suppress opposition. In contrast, ISA like schools, media, religion, and the family shape people’s beliefs and values through ideology, encouraging them to accept the existing social system voluntarily. While RSAs enforce compliance directly, ISA achieve it indirectly by shaping how individuals think and understand the world.
- An example I would use of ideology is the TV show Criminal minds. I used Criminal Minds as an example of a Repressive State Apparatus (RSA) because it focuses on law enforcement using force, surveillance, and legal authority.
Edwin Michael Ordonez – Discussion. 3.2
- A Repressive State Apparatus (RSA) is any institution the government uses to maintain control through force or the threat of force. Althusser calls it “repressive” because these institutions can punish people directly arrest them, restrain them, or physically stop them from acting. The whole point is that they can enforce obedience, even if they don’t always use violence. Example: The police are a good example. They can detain or arrest someone, and the possibility of force is always there even when they’re not actively using it.
- Ideological State Apparatuses (ISAs) work differently. Instead of using force, they shape our beliefs and values so that we accept the social system on our own. These are institutions like schools, the media, religion, and even the family. They teach us what is “normal,” what is “right,” and how we’re supposed to behave. Example: ISAs work kind of quietly they make certain ideas feel like common sense. For example, school doesn’t only teach math or history; it also teaches discipline, punctuality, respecting authority, etc. That’s ideology being taught without anyone calling it that.
- The big difference is how they get people to follow the rules.
RSAs use force or the threat of force (police, courts, prisons, military).
ISAs use ideas and beliefs (schools, religion, media, family).
RSAs make you obey because you have to. ISAs get you to obey because you’ve been taught to see the system as normal or natural. So RSAs control bodies, while ISAs control minds. - I think this image below represents the ideology as it shows hand of people of many different colors with the texts in the image representing the matters that democracy stands for.

Manuel’s RSA’S and ISA’S
1. A Repressive State Apparatus, in Althusser’s theory, refers to the institutions that maintain power through force. Althusser calls it “repressive” because its primary function was to suppress dissent and maintain order through coercion. His choice of words highlights the inherently forceful nature of these institutions. They are not about persuasion or consensus, but about maintaining control, usually often through violence. A good example of an RSA is the police force. The police have the power to arrest, detain, and use force to enforce laws. This is a clear example of repression. It involves limiting individuals freedom and punishing those who deviate from established order.
2. Well according to Althusser, they’re institutions that spread ideology and reinforce the power of the state. Unlike RSAs which use force, ISAs work through persuasion and shaping beliefs. This can include schools, family, media, religious, and cultural institutions like art and literature. They can work like hailing or calling out to individuals and shaping them into subjects who accept their place in the social order. For example, the media might constantly show images of success tied to wealth, encouraging people to accept capitalist values.
3. The main difference is how they exert control. RSA’s function primarily through violence and ISA’s function primarily through ideology. So, RSA’s use coercion, while ISA’s use persuasion. Both serve to maintain the power of the dominant class, but they do so in different ways.
4. Down below is an example of an image of repressive.

Dwayne Jones: State Apparatues
- A Repressive State Apparatus is basically a part of the state that keeps people in line using force or the threat of it. Althusser calls it “repressive” because it works by punishing people or scaring them into obeying the rules. It’s not about convincing people it’s about making sure they follow the law whether they want to or not. One example that I have is The police are a clear example. If people protest and things get out of hand the police can step in with arrests tear gas, or other force to shut it down.
- Ideological State Apparatuses work in a softer way. Instead of using force they shape how people think and act so that they accept the system as normal or even good. They don’t usually feel like control because they’re part of everyday life. Schools are a good example They don’t just teach math or reading they also teach discipline respect for authority and even ideas like patriotism.
- The big difference is how they work. Repressive State Apparatuses use force or punishment like police, courts, prisons while Ideological State Apparatuses use beliefs and values schools media, or religion RSAs make you obey because you don’t want to get in trouble ISAs make you obey because you actually believe in the rules.
- An example of ideology is the “American Dream”the idea that if you work hard you can succeed no matter what. Movies and TV shows often show characters who start with nothing and end up successful.

- A repressive state apparatus, as defined by Althusser, is a part of the state that maintains order and the status quo, created by them, through force or the threat of force. Althusser calls these forces repressive because their power depends on coercion and punishment rather than persuasion, for example, when the police arrest an offender and/or a court gives a sentence, the state threatens the offender’s freedom so they may conform.
- Ideological State Apparatuses operate less directly than RSAs. They include schools, families, churches, and the media, which spread ideas and values that make people accept the existing social order. They instill morals, values, and approved ideas into the people to create that social order’s version of society. Schools teach a variety of subjects alongside the skills necessary to be a better worker in a capitalist world.
- The key difference is in their methods. RSAs rely on force or coercion, while ISAs work through ideas and culture. However, Althusser notes that ISAs are ultimately backed by RSAs: if someone resists ideology long enough, the state may use repressive force to make them comply. Together, the two types of apparatuses maintain social stability but in very different ways.
- One particularly glaring example of an ideological state apparatus can be Pixar’s 2008 movie: WALL-E. A children’s movie with a deep message on the impact of consumerism on the environmental health of our planet.
Ariel Durham
Learning about ideology
- Althusser calls it repressive because it uses police, incarceration, courts, and the military to control people. The repressive state apparatus is a system used through fear and threat to control law and order.
2) The ideological apparatus is shaping beliefs and thinking so that people accept societal norms. Some are schools, families, media, and religion. Instead of using force, they force you to believe you are a good, hard-working American citizen. When you’re a student, school teaches not only academics but also to respect authority.
3) The diffrence between the two is that one uses force to maintain control and the other uses ideas and culture. When used together, they work to keep society running the way it is.
4) This is Candance Owens who is a conseravtive women who believes in religion which is catholic based practices.Which makes her a ideological apparatus.

Jasmin Garzon-Mejia – Repressive and Ideological State Apparatuses
1.) A Repressive State Apparatuses is a part of society that controls people by using force or punishment. Althusser calls it “repressive” because it keeps order like the police, the military, or prisions. For example, if people protest and the police show up to stop them or arrest them, that’s a Repressive Apparatus.
2.) An Ideological State Apparatuses works by shaping our thoughts instead of using force. These are like schools, churches, families, and the media. They make us believe certain things are just normal, like being on time, working hard, or respecting authority. For example, school teaches us how to follow rules and be good workers in the future.
3.) The difference is that Repressive State Apparatuses uses force, while Ideological State Apparatuses uses ideas. RSA keep people in line through things like police and prisons, while ISA convince people to go along with the system by teaching them beliefs.
4.) An example is the movie The Pursuit of Happiness. It shows that if you work hard enough, even if you’re really poor, you can still become successful. That’s ideology because it makes people believe in the “American Dream.” It’s an ISA because the movie doesn’t force anyone to believe this. It teaches the message through entertainment.
Eltoinette Warren – Althusser
- Repressive State Apparatus is a law/rule which comes with fear through violence or force. Althusser calls it repressive because its a control behavior with bodily force to one. An example is if government ruling are not followed people can face consequences by being place in prison or if crimes are happening where the police is unable to control the army then steps in.
2. Ideological State Apparatues is an institution of attending school, going to work, and having to be there for hours at time. You learn behavior such as being obedient and following rules. The same rules apply among family, with being respectful to your elders.
3. The difference between RSA and ISA is accepting authority, listen to your parents and teachers where you are rewarded with good grades. While RSA if you are disruptive in school/class you can be (force) removed from class by security, depending on how server your behavior is, possibly imprisonment.
4. My example of repressive in Ideology is a song by Tupac Shakur “Changes” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eXvBjCO19QY
At 0:27, Tupac expresses how if he committed a robbery, the police could potentially kill a Black man and be rewarded as a hero. The government would view this situation as one less individual they have to provide support for, whether through food or a prison stay. The song goes into further depth, explaining how even when you are completely innocent, you may still face harassment from the police due to racism and your identity. At 3:18, Tupac states, “Instead of a war on poverty, they got a war on drugs,” which provides police with a reason to harass him even though he states he’s never committed a crime that he didn’t have to, its because of where he is from “ghetto” he is always a target. The government system seems to remind the same over the years.
Isis Castillo Garcia- State Apparatuses
- Repressive State Apparatuses are tools of a state to make people comply through the threat of violence. The police, prison system, and judicial system are examples of repressive state apparatus. This is because they are meant to punish people who dissent from acceptable social behavior and create a threat of violence to everyone else.
- Ideological state apparatuses are institutions which promote favorable social behavior through socialization. School, religion, and the family unit are examples of ideological state apparatuses. Throughout history, religion was the main tool used to justify social order. Now, with school being mandatory for children starting at a very early age, school has replaced the role of the Church in indoctrinating children. It is not so much the content of what they are being taught but the way. School rewards obedience and results and punishes rebellious behavior.
- The difference between repressive and Ideological State Apparatuses is that they address two different motivations people have for obeying. The first reason a person might obey a government that is not in their best interest is fear. If a person is made to believe their will be violent consequences for political dissent, they will most likely comply with their government. The other motivation is ideology. When people have been brainwashed into believing something by an institution of authority, they are likely to behave in a way that does not challenge what they have been thought for fear of ostracization and for the sake of social acceptance.
- One example of ideology is the first Woodstock festival. The values promoted were cultural, and political tying the acceptance into a community with allegiance to a certain political ideology.
