- Ideology is a set of beliefs and values that shape how we show up in- and- view the world. It heavily affects societal structure which influences personal opinions on things like equality, healthcare, education and the economy. For example, as a lower-class citizen woman-of-color, I notice how ideology impacts the healthcare system. A conservative ideology suggests personal responsibility and limited government support, while liberal ideology mostly pushes for expanding programs to reduce disparities. These opposing views can affect struggling communities and determine whether they receive aid or not. From what I understand, ideology shows up in everyday life. It’s constantly shaping policies and laws, workplace opportunities, healthcare & social settings. It also allows me to understand why people argue so strongly about ideologies surrounding politics because it reflects values about freedom, fairness and responsibility.
- The difference between Conservative and liberal ideology in U.S politics is based on what each side believes the government should prioritize. Conservatives believe in limited government and promote capitalist competition, which results in corporations driving the economy while individual citizens are expected to take full responsibility for themselves with minimal government interference. Liberals typically emphasize equality and social responsibility- they support government funded programs that help those in poverty with expanded healthcare, food assistance and entry-level job opportunities that are for the most part, easily accessible to the public. For example, Michael Parenti in “Democracy for the few” points out how Goldman Sachs received $10 billion in taxpayer money as a “bailout” yet was able pay out $6.5 billion in bonuses. Conservatives defended this move with the ideology that it was to protect a large business and bring stability to the economy. Liberals on the other hand believed our taxpayer dollars could’ve been invested in public assistance programs for struggling communities. The keywords that stand out to me are equality, freedom, fairness and responsibility. Conservatives believe freedom means keeping the government out of people’s lives and markets, which leads to the responsibility of individuals making sure they have access to the same opportunities as everyone else regardless of social or economic status. For, liberals, it’s all about equality: making sure everyone has access to the same opportunities while fairness is shown by providing government resources to reduce social and economic gaps.
- Althusser defines ideology as more than just beliefs but it’s a whole system of ideas and practices that shape how people live and see the world. He argues that institutions such as schools, churches and media act as “state apparatuses” that pass down values and create structure that keeps society running to benefit those in power. For example, public schools don’t just focus on academics, but they teach discipline, respect for authority as well as preparing students to eventually accept their role in the economy. To me, this means ideology is very powerful because it’s shaping people to fit a certain political and social order without having people think twice about because it’s normalized.
Kyaw Thu Win- My understanding of Ideology
Discussion Board 3.1
a) What is ideology?
Ideology is a group of ideas and beliefs that shape how people think about the world and society. It tells us what we see as normal, fair, or right.
b) Example of ideology
For example, the saying “anyone can succeed if they work hard” is an ideology. It sounds positive, but it hides the fact that not everyone has the same chances because of poverty or discrimination.
c) More details
I understand ideology as a lens that people use to explain problems and solutions. It makes some beliefs seem natural, even when they mainly help certain groups. Ideology is not just in our heads, it is also taught through schools, media, and government, which repeat these ideas and make them part of everyday life.
2. Conservative vs. Liberal Ideology in U.S. Politics
Conservatives and liberals both believe in democracy and capitalism, but they see the role of government differently. Conservatives want less government control in the economy, lower taxes, and more focus on personal responsibility. They also support traditional values and a strong military.
Liberals, on the other hand, believe government should do more to reduce inequality and protect people’s rights. They support programs like Social Security, healthcare, and unemployment insurance to help people who are struggling.
A good example is healthcare. Conservatives prefer private systems where people pay for their own insurance. Liberals believe the government should make sure everyone can have access to healthcare, even if they cannot afford it. This shows the main difference: conservatives focus more on individual responsibility, while liberals focus more on fairness and support through government.
3. Althusser’s Idea of Ideology
Althusser explained that ideology is not only about personal beliefs but also about how institutions shape the way we think. Schools, media, religion, and government all teach people certain ideas that feel “normal” or “common sense.”
For example, schools teach students to follow rules and respect authority. That seems natural, but it also prepares people to accept authority later in jobs and society. In this way, ideology works quietly. It makes people accept the system as if it is natural, even when it benefits those in power the most.
Ideology
1a. Ideology are the beliefs and the ideas that one holds. Usually, they are political, or social based and may differ from person to person. This remains true regardless of whether they are affiliated in the same group or not. These beliefs shape the way they view the world.
1b. One example is conservatives and liberals. The two political groups are associated with a set of ideas that attract individuals who align with those same ideas. Low income families would align more with the Liberal Party while high income families are more likely to side with the Conservative Party.
1c. To me, ideology reveals what we hold most important. Our morals and ethics all contribute to our ideology. Our experiences shape our morals, and therefore impact our beliefs. Understanding your ideology comes with understanding yourself and your goals in life, and that is how I can understand ideology.
2. One of the main differences that divide the ideology between the conservatives and liberals is one values liberty, while the other values equality. The Conservative Party desire to move freely and do as they please, and the Liberal Party desire to be treated with fairness. These two distinct differences is what separates people into the two political parties.
3. Based on Althusser’s definition and view, Ideology is an internalized concept that everyone has. It stems from our experiences and our outlook and form without us realizing. Such experiences could be manual labor, the conditions we live in, etc.
Harrison Quinn Gorter – What Is Ideology?
- Keeping in mind the material covered in this lesson, describe how you understand ideology in your own words.
- A. Ideology, to me, can be defined as a set of values and beliefs that may describe some aspects of a group of people. Within an ideology, there may be smaller factions that are quite different, as well as moderates in the middle.
- B. An example of this can be pre-Trump Republicans (think Bush Sr. or Jr.) to the more liberal side of the Republicans, then we have moderate Republicans in the middle, and lastly, we have MAGA Republicans to the more conservative side of the party.
- C. To further explain my understanding of ideology, I’d say I see a lot of nuance within a given ideology. Not only is that ideology not restricted to one group of people within a given economic class, race, sex, or geographic location, but it’s also constantly evolving! It truly is a spectrum that’s constantly evolving due to historical events, culture, and the economy.
- How do you understand the difference between conservative and liberal ideologies in US politics? What seems to be the big difference, the dividing line? Give an example to backup your arguements.
- A. One of the main concepts of conservatism is liberty. This concept is seen throughout conservative ideology. An example of this can be how the homeschooling movement is more popular in conservative circles. Many conservatives may view homeschooling as a way to teach their children subjects that may not be included or even allowed within the public school curriculum. As for liberals, a main concept may be equality. An example of this can be seen in the movement for a universal healthcare system. Many liberals see the current healthcare system as unfair to many Americans, especially poorer Americans who may not be able to afford healthcare due to the high cost associated. Many liberals view a universal healthcare system as equal to everyone, even if that means many or some of the population may have to pay more in taxes, whether it be through income taxes or “sin” taxes on tobacco, alcohol, and junk food.
- How do you understand Althusser’s definition of ideology? Paraphrase in your own words. Give an example.
- The way I understand Althusser’s definition of ideology is that it may be a means of controlling people. It seems Althusser presented the ordinary school schedule as a way that ideology (mainly the idea that you should be obedient) is drilled into at a young age. An example that comes to mind is the expectation that we should still show respect for police, even if we know their department may be under investigation for wrongdoing.
Tiffany Hamilton- Shaping Ideology: Two major roles
- Ideology is a set of ideas and beliefs that helps people make sense of the world. It influences how we see things. Ideologies can be seen in political systems, cultural values, and everyday practices, shaping what is normal or acceptable in society. An example of ideology can be seen in the beliefs surrounding gender roles. This consists of ideas and beliefs about how men and women should behave in society. In many cultures, traditional gender roles are prevalent, where men are often viewed as the primary providers and decision makers, while women are expected to take on nurturing and caregiving roles. As an African American born in the Caribbean Island of Jamaica, my grandma shared stories about the gender roles during her days, highlighting how men were expected to be providers while women were expected to manage household duties. I see ideology as more than just beliefs, it’s about the system and institutions that promote these ideas.
- The difference between conservative and liberal ideology in us politics is that conservatives beieve in a smaller government. They believe people should take care of themselves without much help from the government. This means they support things like lower taxes and less government spending on social programs on the other hand Liberals believe the government should provide services like healthcare and education to ensure everyone is treated fairly and has what they need. Social justice revolves around fairness and equity in society. Liberals tend to favor policies that reduce inequality. Government role, refers to the extent of government involvement in people’s lives. Conservatives generally advocate for smaller government, emphasizing self reliance.
- My understanding of Althusser’s definition of ideology is that he believes ideology shapes how we perceive the world. He talked about “state apparatuses,” which are institutions (like schools, the legal system, and the government). He argued that ideologies are reproduced through everyday practices and institutions. Althusser’s idea helps explain how the beliefs of conservatives and liberals aren’t just personal opinions; they’re also shaped by a larger system in society
Discussion Board 3.1 Johnny Da Silva
- For me, Ideology is a set of beliefs, values and ideas that a person follows. That Ideology is built through different aspects of a person’s environment, family, work, religion and even the geographic location that a person lives.
For exemple, I grew up in Brazil, in a neighborhood that was very religious. They believed that men and women could not sit together unless they were married. This would be passed down even to kids trying to play games, I could play with girls my age, but I could never be sitting next to them.
In my perspective, ideologies are also built on social pressure, one can be expected to act or behave a certain way, based on their social circles, and that can dictate how that person will react to certain scenarios. I also have an understanding that an ideology usually is strong enough to make a person make decisions that can be seen as ‘wrong’ for other people. - The difference between liberal and conservative, in my point of view, comes down to the different set of beliefs that a specific group tend to follow in specific fields of politics and social groups. For exemple, as we read and saw in the videos, Freedom, in the eyes of a conservative means less government involvement and regulations, while Liberals see freedom requires a government that is more involved in order to guarantee equal rights and access to everyone. Conservatives usually prefer traditions over progress, while liberals prefer progress over tradition.
- Althusser’s definition of ideology is that ideology work as a set of believes and traditions that not only shape a person and their understanding of self, but it also shapes how they are part of the world as a whole. Althusser says that building that believe happens most of the time passively, and most of the people can’t even tell that they are being shapped to a certain ideology. An example of this is our current school system, that it not only teaches us specific subjects, but it also prepares us to behave a certain way in different scenarios.
Islande Exantus-Boiron – Ideology In Policies
- Ideology is ideas and beliefs and attitudes that a person has that reflects understandings or misconceptions of the world social and politically. An example of Ideology is Liberalism and conservatism. Liberalism focuses on an individuals rights, freedom, equality, and democracy. While conservatism focuses on tradition, stability, order and small changes. Ideologies can be conscious or unconscious. Ideology is basically a system of beliefs that shapes how people understand the world and make decisions.
- 2) Conservative Ideology values Liberty. Conservatives believe that the government is a threat to individuals and liberty. They believe that the government is not the solution but the problem. According to the reading Conservatives claim to be more patriotic than liberals. Liberal Ideology values equality. They believe that the government can help solve problems. Liberals according to the reading see the need to improving public service and environmental protection.
3) Althusser believed that ideology is the unconscious way we understand ourselves and our society rather than conscious. He believed that our school system plays a role in Ideology. Althusser believed that students are taught the basics that they are supposed to learn in school but also the importance to individual achievements.
Discussion Board 3.1
So, we’ve encountered three different overviews of what ideology is, but let’s organize our own thinking about it. In this discussion board, think about and comment on the following questions:
1. Keeping in mind the material covered in this lesson, describe how you understand ideology in your own words.
Hint: One way to approach this is as follows
a) Describe what ideology is in a brief paragraph (in your own words).
b) Give an example illustrating what you wrote in (a).
c) Write another paragraph (or two), explaining to your reader with additional details, how you understand ideology.
2. How do you understand the difference between conservative and liberal ideology in US politics? What seem to be the big differences, the dividing line? Given an example to backup your arguments.
Hint: try to identify key words (concepts) that play a big role in making someone consider themselves to be liberal or conservative. Then, explain in your own words what those keywords (concepts) mean.
3. How do you understand Althusser’s definition of ideology? Paraphrase it in your own words. Given an example. Hint: you may have to watch the second video again, and find the few places where Althusser’s position is presented.
Hint: Remember, the discussion boards are crucial for us this semester, because they reproduce our in-class conversations. Try to be thorough and write more, rather than less. I will do the same, and make sure by the time we end our discussion, we have covered the key ideas on the module.
To organize things better, I have broken up our conversation into two parts. After finishing here, head over to Discussion Board 3 – part 2 .
