How do feminist and queer interventions challenge ideas of the “nuclear family?” What do they say are the limits? What other visions do we see for the ways that families can be formed? What are your thoughts about family structure and what these interventions offer us?

After reading the article “Beyond marriage”, its clear as to why feminists and queer interventions challenge the ideas of “nuclear families”. “Nuclear family” is defined as “a couple and their dependent children, regarded as a basic social unit”. Although the definition itself isn’t problematic, social expectations of what a nuclear family should be is what’s so unpleasant. If you are anything other than a cis straight male/female with your own kids, its hard to fit into society and be considered a functional family. This means that queer/trans couples are shunned upon and not considered a “real family”. This is especially bad for older queers as the article states “an estimated 70-80% of LGBT elders live as single people”. Not only is this quite sad, it’s even worse that disabled elders cannot get healthcare benefits that only come when you are legally married. This just brings up the limitations that American society places on feminists and queer individuals. Society shuns queer individuals for having relationships which then results to queer elders not getting married in fear of being ostracized.

These are only a few issues that LGBTQ community face and its important that we push for changes. It’s important to note that there is not a “standard” family dynamic. As long as you and your partner cares for your child, there really shouldn’t be an issue. I believe that these intervention’s are great and we definitely need to take more steps to achieve equality.

Nature vs nurture is the influence of our genetics and up brining that shapes us as who we are as an individual. I believe that nurture has more of an affect than our inheritance does. Within one’s up bringing, family structure plays a huge role in nurturing a child/children. There are many universal types of families, this includes a typical mom and dad with a few kids, or a gay/lesbian couple, single parent, immigrant parents.

The structure of a family affects an individual. Different visions of families are not accepted or typical. This leaves opportunities for hate and bullying to arise against the non “norm” family setting. Individuals might feel insecure and different/weird, like don’t belong due to their family structure. One may feel left out due to too many siblings or having just one parent. Along with this, feminist and queer interventions also comes with differences that affect a child’s path to identity.

A child is more exposed to new ideas and concepts far from the norm social media has portrayed which will allow a different mindset of what family means to them. But with a great difference and gap between rights and citizenship, some families are at a disadvantage than others due to legal marriage rights and legal citizenship. Although this is the case, there have been many movements and acts that pushed for the rights of illegal immigrants: “The organization’s advocacy on behalf of those with criminal convictions sets it apart from anti-deportation groups that use the rhetoric of innocent family-centered deportees” (Monisha Das Gupta). Those within the LGBTQ+ community also continue to support the community by “forming unique unions and relationships that allow them to survive and create the communities and partnerships that mirror their circumstances, needs, and hopes.  While many in the LGBT community call for legal recognition of same-sex marriage, many others – heterosexual and/or LGBT” (Beyond Marriage).

When reading “Beyond same-sex ,marriage: A new strategic vision for all our families band relationships” there was a phrase called the “nuclear family” and feminist and queer challenged that quote on how families are suppose to be and look. They wanted to let people to know that they struggle to have the same rights as regular families. The government finds conjugal relationships legitimate instead of same sex marriages, as if they are dismissing them.

the government finds same sex households to be non traditional, meaning that they don’t follow the norms. same sex households are being limited by being called a not normal family. in my opinion I don’t think it matters what house hold your in , same sex , non same sex , whatever you like and you have family , I think you should be seen as a family and have equal rights and treatment.

They are really juts trying to let people recognize them, and not dismissed there feelings on what they call a family. trying to change the status quo, having the opposite sex as parents and a certain amount of kids does not make you a family, having a place to call home and being around people who you love and love you makes a family , it doesn’t matter who is in your family or circle. that’s the point that feminist and queer were trying to make.

There is speaking about nuclear family. Definition of nuclear family is an elementary family where are two parents and usually two or three children. “U.S. Census findings tell us that a majority of people, whatever their sexual and gender identities, do not live in traditional nuclear families.” According to the reading marriage is a n important factor for part of our society. “Marriage is not the only worthy form of family or relationship, and it should not be legally and economically privileged above all others. While we honor those for whom marriage is the most meaningful personal – for some, also a deeply spiritual – choice, we believe that many other kinds of kinship relationship, households, and families must also be accorded recognition.” Although, there are some problems for them who wants to marriage. It is not easy for LGBT people. There are some economic and other policy problems.

I think that everyone must has chance to make a family. I can not see problem if couple do not want to marriage. Even thought I am sure that nuclear family where parents feel love each other has a perfect influence on new generation. This kind of household is more solid. I think that in my case, I will marriage.

In the Article “BEYOND SAME-SEX MARRIAGE: (A NEW STRATEGIC VISION FOR ALL OUR”) feminist and queer interventions challenge ideas of the (“nuclear family”) by wanting to have accorded recognition as they struggle for “marital rights, and secured stability of diverse households and families”. They struggle to end the requirements of marital and conjugal relationships, quote: “our government define as “legitimate families” to only those households with couples in conjugal relationships” in which I do not agree with our government laws, requirements, belief and definition of what is a legitimate family is. Why do the LGBT community need to conform to these requirements, and why do they need to fight for their rights when it should not be an issue to have to think about to begin with? It’s a fact that is also a way to divide and oppress many Americans that do not meet a certain quota which is against human rights.

According to the (US Census) the “majority of people, whatever their sexual and gender identities, do not live in traditional nuclear families” Separating the LBGT community from what they define as a normal traditional family. These certain limits have been ancient traditions that must catch up to new generations of diversity. I believe this is going against our human rights, as people should have the right to choose to pick their own families without any judgement.

Some visions of how to forms a family or relationship besides marriage could be, common law, unmarried partners with children, no matter what gender or same sex partner. I believe family is formed through love, honesty, trust, and bond that no limited traditions can understand. The requirements are no longer a valid reason to separate or decline families of their rights that have been already established. These interventions help us unveil the obvious ridiculous requirements that do not make sense. They are an invasion of rights, privacy and hinder many Americans today.
