Once you have accessed Brightspace, you’ll want a practice course that you can use to start learning about Brightspace features and functionality. Faculty will be able to create their own practice course shells in Brightspace, with a few limitations. Note that you will not be able to add students to these practice sites and that BMCC-specific tools (e.g., VoiceThread and Hypothesis) will not be available. You can copy content from your practice course(s) to your live courses once they have been created in Brightspace.
To create a practice course in Brightspace:
- Sign in to https://brightspace.cuny.edu/.
- At the bottom of the main page, you will see a ‘Practice Sites’ widget and a prompt to ‘Create a New Course.’

- Select ‘Get Started.’
- Enter a name for practice sites under ‘Course Name.’
- Under Course Type, select ‘CUNY practice site.’

After creating the practice course, it should appear under My Courses -> All on the Brightspace home page. You will also have links immediately presented you to ‘Go to course homepage’ or ‘Create another course.” Note that the first option presented, ‘Enroll students in classlist,’ is currently a dead end since you don’t have that option in the CUNY system to add users.
Once you have created a practice site, you are ready to get started learning Brightspace.

You are all set to start designing course content in Brightspace.
